theres an electrical plug above the main sump on left side.can someone tell me what it is.took it out and had a look at it, there's pins on the inner part that goes into the gearbox.looks like there's tabs broken on the grey plastic part.should there be something here that connects onto the pins?

That may be the problem. I have my old gearbox in the garage. I think that there are several wires from that plug to solenoids or the like inside the box. Can you post up a picture? Does the plug face upwards and is it about one inch in diameter?

i'm going to take it out in about an hour or so and i;ll post a picture.think it is about an inch in diameter.the connector with wires(about 6?) points upwards and the part that sits inside the top of the sump has the pins(facing downwards) which must be on the end of  each wire coming in.my thought was  something should be connected to these pins?level sensor?the plug just pushes in.

Yes, that is the one. I have taken a photo and  posted on Photobucket.

On mine the loom is obviously on the car still and the grey "collar" comes out of the box leaving the internal connector dangling inside. I think it is broken on mine.

Edited - you have to laugh. I can't even see my own photos on OOF. If it isn't there let me know!!

before you posted your message i decided to take the gearbox sump off and have a look and yes there was the the connector dangling.plugged in back in til it clicked on and put it back together,re-filled and its now sorted.gearbox working perfect,no fault warning.chuffed, was thinking new box might be needed.surprised i couldnt find anything anywhere online about same thing.theres loads of people have the same symptoms but only"check oil level"for an answer.thanks for your reply and pic. could that have been all that was wrong with yours?

If you'd have had the codes read, you'd have found the problem  :y
