can anyone point me at what would make my dad's car more spritely?
It's really sluggish on pick up - if you ring it's neck it aint bad but for a 2.5td i would expect better.
Thanks
Ian

if its a manual, chip it. They were de-tuned for Vx and its not full BMW spec power.
Oil changes every 3k help too
-
For once, I have to agree with Tunnie above - a bloody good service (these engines do need very regular oil changes -4.5k max, but I'd stick to 3k max), and if your gearbox is strong enough, pop a different chip in it to bring it back to BMW spec.

car is re-mapped but has no punchy get up and go....
do these not suffer from MAF detorioation?
-
Does it struggle to get up to 2k rpm or is it just sluggish up to the turbo coming in around 1750 rpm?
-
generally slow really have to strangle it to get it going
-
Try unplugging the MAF and run it round the block, cured my sluggishness. I just need to find a new MAF for mine now as the take off from idle to about 1500rpm is a little sluggish unless I get the revs up a bit before the clutch lets go :P

Ive had one that was really sluggish, wouldn't even mount a kerb, after a service and the diesel Magic trick, still the same, turned out to be the MAF, fitted a replacement but only lasted about 500 miles before it all came back to haunt me again.
TBH is its already been remapped it should fly. :y

i reckon it's maf - the car is very very sluggish
engine is sweet and well serviced only done 90k.
how much is a MAF? does it need coding to car?

New about the £200 mark unless you can find a breaker (I know somewhere that has a 2.5 atm ;) ) No just plug and play matey. Have you tried it with the MAF unplugged?
-
i'll try unplugging ti this weekend when i visit the folks.
what effect will that have?
-
If it's a lot better performance wise it proves it's the MAF that's at fault ;) :y
-
i'll try it over weekend .... ;D

Just get on to http://www.megavaux.co.uk/Default.aspx and get them to check the MAF part number with the 2 they have :y

only uk models to have a maf was x25dt. y25dt also had maf, but was opel only
-
Iirc theres only one maf for the 2.5td part no 90528813(which will be on your maf just to double check the number)
-
tried unplugging MAF today and car was flat as opps.
plugged back in car has nothing below 2000 revs but above that it does go well if you ring it's neck. i reckon my dad pootles about in it judging by the clouds of black smoke i had from exhaust. The speedo moves round at quite a rate when giving it some. I thought all must be ok if still pulling up hill at 90 ish (on private road.... ;))
one thing i noticed is it's very easy revving. very eager but massive turbo lag.
Convinced him to try some forte diesel additive and give it some stick now and then
-
Sounds like it just needs some fresh engine oil in there...
-
check the wastegate is not too sticky as well.
-
whats a maf? and where is it?
-
it the tube shaped sensor on airbox that senses air temp and flow to turbo
