Title: Help - Changed Gasket, Now Car Won't Idle
Post by: sounddezign on 25 June 2009, 10:48:25
Hello everyone, I'm after some friendly help.

Last night I changed the rocker cover gaskets on my 2.5 V6 (1997), all went well and got it all put back together with no left over bolts. The only problem was the oil that had filled the spark plug holes, I soaked up as much as I could but inevitably some ended up going into the bores when I took the plugs out to change.

Anyway I started the car up and clouds of smoke started coming out of the exhaust (oil burning off i presume) and the idle was very eratic (chug chug chug). I took the car for a drive to try to blow everything through, and it drives really well, seems to have a little more power than previously. But the engine still will not idle. It keeps going chug chug chug and stalls.

Have I forgotten to put an air hose or electrical connector back on that only deals with idling? Has anyone else had this problem?

Thanks
Andy

could be an air leak, did you put new O rings on the air intake manifold & breather panel ontop of the plenum, was all located when re-fitting?.  ;)

Spray around lightly with carb cleaner whilst the engine is running .. if engine note changes you have just found a vac leak ..... :)  as the carb cleaner is sucked in and burned the engine note changes ...  once fixed wipe down with paper towel.

Result ... fixed vac leak plus a nice clean engine ..  :)

Fixed it - was one of the O-rings under the plenum, got knocked out of place when putting the plenum back. It's now running lovely again. Thanks guys
