Tickover is about 700.when i go into drive(or reverse)it drops to about 500(but not as low all the time) and quickly revs back to 700 again.occasionally it drops below 500 and this is when it stalls. It doesn't happen all the time and its possible to avoid it if i give it slight acceleration just after i go from neutral to drive (or reverse). It stalled once going round a slow corner.(bit scary loosing power steering!)someone mentioned the crank sensor.Where is this located?Anything else it could be?
-
crank sensor is just below the starter motor. Never known a crank sensor to fail on 2.td though.
Have you paperclipped it?
-
no havent paperclipped it.have read up on it though.i'll give it a try and see what comes up.
-
tried the paperclip test but only got 1-2 (start of sequence?)It just kept repeating this.

You should've got '1 - 2' three times, then it should've repeated this three times.
First three is start of diagnostic sequence, second three is end of diagnostics.
No codes in between means no codes stored!

Not quite - 3 x 12 signify the start of diags, the next 3 x 12 signify that start of next run of codes (not the end of diags ).
Same result though - 4 x 12s in a row mean no faults :y

I stand corrected TB !!!!!!

i had a 2.5td auto that stalled like yours, my problem was the vacuum pipes underneath the inlet manifold had perished an fallen off, once replaced problem never occured again, good luck Al
-
thanks for that.they were perished and two had holes from rubbing against bits of the engine.now replaced pipes and surprisingly its the same.still doing the same thing with the revs(could be a very slight difference but not sure) It did stall going slowly up the slope of my driveway.(most likely to stall here when edging out looking for traffic coming)also noticed it does it when turning the steering.if at full lock i turn the steering a little each way it does the same thing with the revs-dropping and quickly revving back up(with a bit of a sucking noise? somewhere? )
