Title: Barsteward to start
Post by: dbug on 28 June 2009, 19:06:48
Happened over the last week or so - real s*d to start from cold - warm ok.  Turns over, trys to start, sometimes small backfire, then starts.

Checked codes - none stored.  Had new cambelt kit 5K ago - rechecked that today, timing still spot on.
New Vx crank sensor fitted recently about 3K ago (to cure code 19).
When started pulls well revs to red line ok.  Fuel consumption normal.
Checked plug leads (dry and ok), new Vx plugs fitted 5K miles ago.
No air leaks - checked all vac pipes on.
Fitted new egr gasket - previous was blowing.

Coil pack?  Fuel? (new filter fitted 4K miles ago) - any ideas?

I've no idea ... but the backfire bit worries me ...   makes it sound like timing, either valve - but you've checked that - or HT ... and that is ECU controlled .. :(

Could be something as simple as a plug breaking down. Back fires happen when unburnt fuel ignites in the exhaust iirc :y

Backfire worried me too - thats why I checked cam timing out.

However seems to be better now - no backfiring and starting second or third attempt when cold.  Starts on button when warm.

Going to change dis pack to see if that is problem, although once started runs and pulls well.  Also got a set of plug leads although existing ones look good and dry.

Its a bl**dy mystery at the moment!

Agreed Daz - thats why I think its ignition related - plugs new around 5K ago and genuine Vx twin electrode ones.   BUT have had new plugs fail in the past!!  Could always fit another set I guess.

If your car pulls well I would assume its not your dispack, pretty sure when under load breaking down dispacks start playing up.... I would try the cheap option first the plugs :y

Cheers mate, although have both dis pack variants here so swap not an issue.  Might  also be easier than getting to back plug nearside bank  ;)

Well if you are doing the dispack should be no problem doing the plugs at the same time :y
