I've noticed that diesel engine exhaust systems live much longer than petrol engine systems.
With this in mind, is it worth fitting the OE exhaust rather than inferior aftermarket systems?

Problem now is the exhausts the vx dealers supply are not the same quality as they used to be......

We are not sure if thats the case with the TD ones. Diesel ones always seem to last much longer anyway - 10yrs approx ime, rather than the 5-6yrs for petrol

i have just got an Eteranl system on my petrol and I would in no way refer to it as inferior. Look and fit and sound is fantastic and SO much cheaper than the OEM.
I REALLY can't see why anybody would buy an OEM now.

Er, would't hotter be better ie dry out the system. Water is what makes the rust.

I think its because diesel exhaust is 'oilier' than petrol and this inhibits the corrosion.

The cats are at fault, petrol cats produce more water than diesel so petrol ones rust and rot from the inside a lot faster than diesel.
(thats my excuse and i'm sticking to it. Lol)

I recently had the dilema of which exhaust system to go for on my petrol/LPG 2.6, and I went with longlife stainless steel. At £389-00 inc vat and fitting I think it represents good value as I am quiet lazy and couldn't be troubled to do the work myself. It won't need doing again and it looks a picture. I chose a tailpipe that fits the bumper cutout and it looks as though it was designed for it. The guys built the system on site whilst I waited and it only took about 2 and a half hours. I have crawled about underneath and had a good look at it and it is quite a work of art, and all shiny like chrome. An excellent job with no clamp joints now, just pipes to boxes and all welded, so no specific weak points at joints to collect moisture. I was quoted about £350 for a pattern (mostly Timax) system fitetd and with VAT so it was a no-brainer for me. I would recommend the stainless option. I used the Topgear website and the 'Longlife' system. Very happy with it, and it sounds quiet a bit better than stock - you can choose what sound it makes, quiet, sporty etc. mine is mild sport, but is inaudible at motorway speeds. Has a nice deep burble at idle as well. I used the Basingstoke fitters and they were very good.

But.
GM ones used to be double walled, and much, much better quaility, in terms of how long they lasted and noise levels.
Sadly, they just sell the same crap kwitfit do, so cheapo systems are just as good!
Not sure what GM are doing with TD zorsts, because its a BMW lump, they may still be giving out decent exahusts. :-/
