Title: headlight adjusters

does anyone know if a headlight adjuster from a normal halogen headlight (ie pre projector) will fit a HID headlight did a search but could not find anything

No.
The later reflector sits further forward so longer adjusters and screws were needed.

Older (white) adjusters wont allow you to set the beam correctly.
