Title: auto transmission oil level check(how)
Post by: batt45 on 01 July 2009, 21:44:28
Hello. I am wondering if anyone can give me guidance on where to check the auto transmission level. I was expecting to see a very visible stick as i have on previous autos, but cannot see one on this new Omega i have. It is a 52plate 2.6 MV6...Many thanks.....

I got a bit plastic pipe from B&Q that fits perfect into the litre bottles. Its only about a pound a meter.I cut and put on about 30cm so it was possible to get the bottle higher than the filler plug making it easy to squeeze in.My filler/drain plug needs an allen key rather than a 13mm socket.Important thing is car must be running when checking/filling gear oil.Torque converter fills with oil when running and empties when not so level is higher than filler plug when not running and would pour out if plug removed.(i've learned so much already from this forum!)

Still not really sure about your advice. How do you know if it needs oil in the first place. Surely there must be a dip stick to check it with first otherwise how do you know you have not over filled it or under filled it. Both my other auto's had dip sticks. Surely you don't have to take it to a garage to get it checked,,,not keen on the idea of getting under the car....any more advice pleaseee,,,Batt45 :-/

yup  :'(

no dipstick.

you have to have the car level, and running, with plug out to determine correct level, so you do need to add some oil to check.

Its supposedly a 'sealed unit' and hence the oil level should always be fine.  The designer was obviously smoking something that day!

So, yes, bizarre, but true.

I have one VX dealer telling me it does not need changing (handbook says "only under extreme conditions") and another saying it should be changed at 80,000 miles on their service sheet. They want £170 all in for the job - not sure of split between fluid and gasket and labour yet to check if it is worth buying via my Trade Club card. Because the Service Attention Gearbox code is up maybe I have driven it to extreme conditions (unlikely at my age). It has been doing a lot of short journeys in last 2 years with the occasional motorway bursts.

parts 3rd party will cost you about £50 for 10litres fluid, and £25-30 for the gaskets and filter.

Thanks Jimbob - Are you sure the filter is only £30? If I have to change the filter then the one I would need has an actuator built into it and at VX full price is £120 - 2 weeks lead time. This would make the job £300 before I go for discount on parts.

I am clarifying part numbers with VX.

Price from Jpat is £30 all in including delivery for everything except the oils. This is confusing now given VX price of £168 for same.

Is my box an AR25 on a 2001 3.2?

something still not correct - spoke to another dealer and part numbers he is giving are different to the first dealer

For a 2001 3.2 V6 auto does anyone know difference please between:

96014234 and 96041943 - Gasket
96015432 and 96041958 - Filter

I have been quoted £4.83 L full retail for Dextron 3

The 2nd number in each of those are incorrect....they have incorrectly selected the very rare 5 speed automatic box, not the 4 speed that you have  :y

Thanks Jimbob - I am just back from town and the Camberley dealer had it right - mine is a 4 speed, and Aldershot dealer had it wrong - gave me 5 speed details.

All is clear now and will job will be done friday.

Thanks for your help

Price for job was fixed in advance with VX dealer at £55 - which is 3/4 of an hour I think. It took them from 10 am to 2.30 to change ATF - "we don't get this job very often".

I supplied the parts. Transmission Oil they say was in fact low - now changed 5L but not sure if they changed both pan gaskets as requested. They have reset codes and so let us see if fault is indeed cured.

Have to go to Manchester tomorrow but will not risk Omega until I am sure nothing is going to fall of after visit to VX as is usually the case.

And a very long smoke it was too.
Left the dipstick idea out, but was a dipstick themselves ?!!.

Don't know of any other car that has this idea ?.  Don't know anyone with the New shape Vectra's or if they have the same set-up.

You're not the first person that's probably cursed about this, doubt the last to chap !!.

Got to check mine soon to !!!!!!  ::)
