Title: Elite estate 2.5 1998 'automatic gearbox, check'?
Post by: bootyboy2006 on 12 July 2009, 15:05:44
Hi, our Omega Elite automatic estate 2498cc 1998, keeps breaking down. It cuts out and we get the message 'Automatic Gearbox, check' on the dashboard. Then it won't start again for about 10 mins. Can anyone offer any advice. Have had to have it towed to garage but mechanic didn't seem to have any ideas? Am hoping it is something simple :(

Your car needs plugging in to a fault code reader to see what it's complaining about. Gearbox fault could be a number of things, some not directly related to the gearbox itself.  :y

Hell there

In order to check the fault try the paper clip test it works a treat and I did it Friday and identified my fault straight away

Just one thing, I am unsure whether it will show gear box faults, certainly engine faults will show, maybe someone else will know to confirm this.  All the best with it anyway I know how frustrating it can be.

It will only do engine faults though, it could still be a gearbox fault that the car is complaining about.  :y :y

If you fill in your details on your profile, there could very well be someone local to you who can help with diagnostics &/or repair.  ;) ;) ;)

The auto gearbox on my 2001 3.2 V6 was behaving oddly including one instance of causing a limp mode condition. Gearbox Service alert came up on the "pedal test" (which my car has but do not think that yours does). Gearbox fluid turned out to be low and so fluidand, gaskets and filter have been changed. Fingers crossed this has solved it.

There is a "how to" on the maintenance guides as to how to check the gearbox transmission fluid
