Title: Omega td bad starting in general
Post by: steve2.5cd on 16 July 2009, 13:23:21
I have read numerous threads about bad starting with the omega diesels. Why would a car not start because it has less than 20 - 25 litres of diesel in the tank ? Is there likely to be a common fuel pump fault, but they start ok when the fuel level is higher. I dont get it !. What are your thoughts guys ?

my father-in-law has got a td with poor starting. Not down to the low fuel problem though (i think it is a fault with the in-tank pump). It was struggling to start when warm/hot but started fine from cold. Now though its struggling from cold aswell. Plan is to fit new glow plugs and 1 of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Hot-Starting-Fix-Range-Rover-BMW-Diesel-P38-DT-DSE_W0QQitemZ370230176741QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item5633702be5&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A7%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C293%3A2%7C294%3A50

It's the lift pump in the tank circa £110
Wear rubber gloves!!

Because the fuel pump sits in the bottom of the tank and there is more pressure and its easier for it to pump the fuel when its covered :y

Worth trying Diesel Magic to clear out any crud that built up as the carbon in the fuel silts it all up and just like with heart/arteries the pump has to work harder then and dies prematurely

Poor or NOT starting below 20 litres is when the lift pump motor doesn’t run at all for  whatever reason There is also a vaine type of pump in the VE bosh injector pump itself what happens is there is too much resistance sucking the diesel through the motor so Diesel is sucked up the Y piece corrugated bypass pipe instead hence it gets very iffy below 20 litres ive took my lift pump out completely because it was constantly P*ssing  about  leaving me stranded in all sorts of wonderful & weird towns  and put a piece of rubber pipe direct in to the white chamber were the pump was and put another pipe on to the return and diverted it to the far end of the tank ive been down to 10 litres and had no problems since
Im not saying this is the way to go or it’s a fix cos it aint but it works for me until i can sort a decen lift pump out .. :y
