Title: overheating and oil!
Post by: ange4631 on 16 July 2009, 15:09:02
please help, my 2.5 estate starting over heating about a month ago (been away 2 weeks) and started loosing a lot of coolant (top hose monut split that had been repaired but went again) then she began overheating.
after constantly topping her up she went into the red and broke down (this has happened a couple of times).

i have since tried to temp. repair this just to get me to and from work but, and she has not been driven more than a mile or two at a time since) she now wont hold the repair and when started now leaks oil around the edge of the bell housing (looks like its coming from quite high up, and checked, its not atf) on both sides, worse on the drivers side. any help in this would be much appreciated as i think i may be thinking its the HG, cheers in advance for your eagerly awaited replies!!

check for oil in plg well could be rocker cover gaskets have gone brittle through age and high temp of engine. also is there any gunge in water bottle could have suspect oil cooler.

coolant hasnt changed colour (even though it goes down quite quickly) will check oil wells!! (will i have to take plugs out, or just check the wells themselves)
how hard are they to replace, and would this cause this type of oil leak as i couldnt really see where the leak was coming from, when looking into engine bay, only from having a quick look from underneath!! (car unjacked)

If you keep punishing you mig it could well be the HG so first have a look at what nielr said, if you can be sure its not them then you will have to check your heads. but dont drive it till you get it sorted or it could get that bad that you need a complet new engine.

If your Cam Covers are leaking you will more than likely have oil in the spark plug wells, plus oil can leak out of the back running down the rear of the engine to end up on the gearbox.
But if you have a water leak to that is something seperate I would think. Have you looked for a water leak? can you see none?

when i looked at her last, she looked like she had a little oil on the rocker cover, but thought it might have been me filling her up and missing. water is just leaking from the top mount as mentioned.

I agree.
Our MIG was fitted with pattern gaskets the first time around (before we owned it), it lasted 5 minutes (not literally, but you get the idea) before genuine Vx were used on the second occasion.

@ ange4631

Taking it in to the red will not do it any favours at all.
Stop crucifying it....just fix it before you do proper damage.
