manual - 35mpg, auto - 30mpg.
Chipped: manual - 40+mpg, auto - 35mpg
MAXIMUM service 4.5k miles on earlier ones, 7.5k miles on later ones. If this has been ignored in past, you're likely to get a whole heap of trouble.
autos blow their autoboxes around 120-150k, silt their rads around 120k. waterpump sheds its impellors with regular monotony.
heads warp or crack if they overheat
when the engine fails (usually as a result of poor servicing), its normally spectacular.
don't get all excited about the engine saying BMW - BMW do not make great engines in their normal road cars, and this is no exception. People immediately see BMW and assuming its something special.
That said, when chipped (need stronger autobox or manual), and running properly, its a nice cruiser. It won't win any races though. I miss my old 2.5td omega.

I will have a nice Facelift 2.5td for sale in a week or so :y

Mine's chipped and returns 33mpg around here, with 'Mrs Sethsmate' driving it like she stole it!
Markseth's saloon is pretty well identical too.
Purely my choice, but it gets an engine oil/filter-change every 2500 miles, which is roughly twice-yearly due to lowish use and short journeys.
'TheBoy' has summed it up pretty well!

Perfect :y, much more and you start to feel the engine complaining about the oil

Nearly forgot ........
Pricewise, if you'll pay it - they'll ask it ..... !
Seriously though, depending on model spec etc etc; it should be possible to pick up a nice late model for around a grand I reckon.

Mine definately does less MPG now it's chipped.
Just had the water pump changed as a precaution @113,000 and it was in perfect nick.
Now owned for 3 years and regular oil changes, and just keeps going and going with no major engine problems..............Yet!... fingers crossed ;) :y

Something not right there :-? Mines much better even with the timing not quite right yet (after changing the injection pump.)
I had an auto that blew 3rd gear at 160k. Chipping an AR25 is not a good idea. It lasted less than 200 miles ::).
Also had the waterpump go at 190k miles and that's it.
Bought my manual 2.5td so I stopped regular use of the auto at 225k miles. Engine was sweet as can be.
