Title: Omega automatic gearbox problems
Post by: hubble on 07 June 2009, 14:50:21
Can anyone help me?  I have recently bought a Vauxhall Omega 2.5 which has a problem with reverse gear.  All forward gears are fine but you have to really rev the engine to get the car to move slowly backwards.  After reading all the info on this site I decided to fill the gearbox with oil but the filler plug has been damaged and I'm not able to get it out ... any suggestions as to why it won't go backwards and how to get the filler plug out now that its damaged?

Any suggestions would be welcome!!

Thanks ...  ;)

By the sounds of things buddy your gearbox is knackered. No point in trying to put oil into it, scrap the g/box and fit a good secondhand one. Plenty of breakers on here that could sell one to you.

i would suggest dropping both sumps on the box personnally, the level hole plug issue can be addressed with sump removed and examin the atf/contents, needs a car lift to avoid spilling the hole lot on your self and the drive.

Unfortunately little can be done with the box in situ other than servicing the fluid. So once the fluid and filter has been changed you may find the symptoms remain, in which case the procedure has been a waiste of time and money.Any form of slippage is said to be bad news. Maybe some more opinions on here will help.

do not waste your time changing the oil or checking the level, the problem is internal,ie tear it apart time :(

An older one of mine did that. Eventually I lost reverse. I brought it to the AT man. He dropped the sumps said there was water in the ATF , & the reverse clutches were loosing their linings. My breather had fallen off a long time previously & I had driven thru a flood. 2nd hand box was fitted & it lasted until car was retired with no hot start prob,
