as i open the bonet down the side of the exaust manifold ...there is a small electric water pump ....whats that all about ??

For keeping the car warm in the winter without the engine running.

Part of the winter pack iirc.

Ignition on, climate on, and that pump will circulate the warm coolant keeping you toasty  :y
