Had the engine running without the fan belt running, and the garage have said it is still rattling. The water pump had gone, bearings in pump had worn....

Belt was changed 20000 miles ago. Wondering if pump goes if it would affect the engine. Part from noise from pump engine ran perfectly...

How many years ago was the cambelt replaced?

I would fit a new cambelt kit pronto. any noise in the vicinity of the water pump that is still there when the aux belt is disconnected is more than likely failing tensioner bearings. The tensioner may not have been replaced last time the belt was done.

When the cambelt was done was it just a belt or a kit? Because as suggested above it could have been just a belt and the kit might not have been done for 2/3/4 cambelt changes. Not worth the risk unless you can either localise the noise a bit further or know it was a kit done recently and not just a belt.

If the kit was done, then the list is big unless you find out where it's coming from. IE oil pump, followers, crankshaft bearings etc; etc;

The water pump is driven by the aux belt so its poor diag on the part of the garage!
