Post by: portomega on 24 July 2009, 12:51:51
Right along with the hole in the sump ( now covered with sealant which isnt really working lol) i had the bonnet up just now and at the top of the engine theres 8 sort of bolts  on each side and the front one on the right hand side has oil at the base of it? whats this a sign of?

me too !!!! ;) - but not excessively so. I just wipe it off every time I check the oil.

I had thought if giving the torx a tweek to try and tighten it up but haven't done so yet.

I'd be interested in any responses you get just to make sure it's not an indication of something about to happen. ;)

o ring under it has failed. Keep a very close eye on oil in spark plug wells - as soone as this happenes, you need to replace the cam cover gaskets

If they didn't, well, thats another garage to never, ever use again!  If they did, surely its still under warranty?

All work done by any garage should be covered by warranty.  That said, it shows this lot are poor, and probably best not to let them touch your car.  Do it yourself (cam covers are fairly easy, even for non DIYers), then you ensure its done with care, and done properly.

they are a seal to stop oil leaking out the bolthole in camcover. Always done at same time as you have to take cam cover off to do them

Just rung the garage the cam gasket jobs have only a 1 month warranty  :'(  id love to do it myself but just dont have the mechanical knowledge or confidence. Will take it to a different garage this time and make sure i ask them to do the O rings too, at the moment it seems just to be the one bolt that has oil at the base . Also just rung vauxhall to order the new sump and its £135 plus £45 for the gasket!  :o my wallet is going to take a beating this month!  :D ;D :(

Ok thanks for the info.
I'm going to have the cover replaced again with no expense as it isn't done properly the first time and ask them to replace the O-ring.
How much would they cost if you happen to know

Do you have to buy the o-rings seperately? or do they come in the gasket kit?

or get your arse to Newent meet (about 80 miles from you) - someone will show you how to do it. If you camp, make a night/weekend of it. If you don't do camping, make it a day trip.

PM Loo-Knee, or see meets section if that is a possible answer

Im doing nights now every night until august 10th so no time to travel , going to be hard enough to get it into a garage and get it back in time for work lol ...never become a security guard! never any free time!

Could the o-rings be done alone and not have the whole gasket done again?

I would not say criminal but I would say that the work done/parts supplied are not of suitable quality.  The test here is whether a reasonable consumer would expect the fix to last a couple of months or years.  Irrespective of the 'warranty' that the garage puts on their work, they are covered by the sale of goods act.  Their workmanship/parts are clearly fault.  i would now write to them to explain that you believe this is the case, then explain that you will go to trading standards and small claim court with evidence from another garage who has to remedy the work.

THe problem is that saying a '1 month warannty' is just BS to get you to go away.  professional garages and shops think they can get themselves off the hook by saying this when it is irrelevant what waranty they give, if their work is not fit for purpose; money back!

Not sure if SoG covers for service, only 'goods'? Trading Standards would be best peeps to chat to
