Lead foot?

Generally chipping it gives a reasonable mpg improvement

Diesel Magic trick to start with. Get a new fuel filter, pour a bottle of Diesel Magic directly into the fuel filter, fit to car and run at a fast idle for a few minutes.

I have a pump issue that's is currently being sorted. The D.M trick has been known to sort out the dreaded 64. Didn't on mine, but it certainly bumped the average consumption up from 41mpg to 44mpg.
Also check the air filter, it may need replacing. The straight six sucks in a lot of air.
(If run without filter and airbox they've been known to suck in seagulls, small children, MX-5's etc :D)
As for chipping, seeing as it's a manual, don't even think about it...just do it !!! :y
