My 2.5TD has always klonked and crashed over road bumps and holes. The garage examined the suspension at the last service -- and found nothing wrong.
Is a hard ride a feature of this car?

Normally a nice, relaxing ride. Engine weight makes the front end 'bite' more than other ones in my experience.
If you're getting knocking and banging, thats sure sign of worn components

:-? Hard suspension ???
Words like wallowing, soft, marshmallow come to mind with the standard set up on both of mine. :D

I agree with the above, sounds like yours has been lowered/stiffened, plus you are in need of wishbones/droplinks. ::)

Once lowered (40mm) and 17" rims fitted, the handling of my '94 Elite was transformed. Almost no body roll or wallowing, but still a comfortable ride. Need to sort out my current Mig now.
Even if it's been lowered, there shouldn't be any clonking. I'd have a look at the drop-links. If the clonking is more noticable at low speeds over bumps or any rough surface then I'd say the issue lies there.
If they are worn, they clonk, but do not affect the handling/steering.
Worn wishbones would usually cause handling/pulling issues.
Drop-links are easy enough to change and the parts should cost less that £30 for both sides.

The car does tend to pull to the left. According to wifey, the suspension noise is less severe with a full fuel tank.
I will have to take a look, but not easy without a pit or car lift.
