Title: HELP ROCKER COVER GASKET
Post by: ryan martin on 23 July 2009, 15:29:15
Hi
Got a problem with and oil leak and i think ive narrowed it down to rocker cover gasket.
Been to vauxhall as you lot advised to use only vauxhall gasket but vauxhall only sell cover with gasket attatched for £88 + vat and not the gasket on its own.
didnt want to use patten part as didnt want to take my car apart for it to leak again
any ideas please

You are the second member to state you cannot get the gaskets without the covers coming with them! :o :o :o

However, I have so far only purchased the gaskets separate from my dealer, which are under part no. 090511451  ;) ;) ;)

Try a different dealer. Or PM andyc on here. :y

If you take the list of part numbers from the guide, they'll be able to sort you out.

Clean the breathers as well or you will end up buying more gaskets when they go again in the near future

I have just bought a full set of gaskets from www.vauxhall-car-parts.co.uk for about £68.  It says on the web site that they are genuine parts but I will double check when I get them.

I too have been priced for the rocker cover complete with gaskets by Vauxhall.

I did however do the job myself afteer a bodge job by a non Vauxhall garage who left the job to the junior mechanic who changed the n/s cover without properly removing the obstructions around it. In removing the cover he cracked it but replaced it filling the crack with sealant only for me to later find it still leaking.  I decided to do the job myself where I found the crack... not a happy bunny was I.  I then had to buy the whole cover at the price you stated.

At the same time I replaced the rocker gaskets on the other bank while all was dismantled.  Not wanting to pay for a whole rocker case I purchased gaskets from motor factors.  Before fitting them i carefully checked them against the VX gaskets on the new cover and they were exactly the same and good value for about £10 for the two it takes for each bank.  I have fitted these and they have been fine since, remember to use the right gasket sealant, the black high temp sealant.
Also get new rubber rings for the rocker cover bolts, these I could only get from Vx and they were only 18p each, you need four per cover.

Oh and follow Elite Pete's advice re checking and cleaning the breathers, these are usually the cause of some leaks other than gasket fatigue and can cause pressure build up blowing oil out through your newly fitted gaskets and it will be a case of starting again !
All the best buddy   :y

Beware, I have tried 4 different types of pattern gasket now including the likes of Elring and FAI......so far I have had no success with them, some last a week, others 6 months but, there is a single common statement......they are not even worth bothering with.

Ow yes, you can still get the gaskets seperate, simply quote the part numbers from the guide on here.

I just checked with Vauxhall-Car-Parts and they have confirmed that the gaskets they sold me were pattern and not genuine.

I know that I must at least get genuine Vauxhall cam cover gaskets, but what about the rest of the gaskets and O-rings?  Is it as essential for these to be genuine or would I get away with just buying the cam cover gaskets direct from Vauxhall and use the other pattern parts for the rest of the change?

By the time you've flipped about calling different people, you'll barely have saved anything. IMHO of course.

6 years ago I went through the whole sorry sequence of buying new cam covers (because the dealers parts desk told me I couldn't buy the gasket separately). There didn't appear to be much wrong with the ones that came off.

Later I ended up taking the engine out to take the cylinder heads off because the head gaskets were rotten. When I had the heads off I took the breather off also. It was completely choked with baked oil deposits.

I suspect that no matter how good the seals are a blocked breather will blow the seals. If I were to have another problem with weeping cam cover seals I would start by fitting a new crankcase breather.

Well I had bought the whole set online thinking they were genuine and it was only when I got them that i realised they were not.  I am going to return the actual cam cover gaskets for a refund and just want to know if I can use the rest of the parts.

while doing the anti rol bar links i had a look underneath and noticed the drips of oil sitting on the 2 bolts under the gearbox if the cam gaskets leaks at the rear of the engine would it run down to the gear box or could it be the gear box leaking .

Yes, the oil escaping from the cam cover gaskets usually ends up dripping from there!! :'( :'( :'(
