Hi,
Does anyone know how to test a V6 oil cooler? I have oil in the water tank and have taken the oil cooler out but would like to test it before splashing out on a replacement. Any help appreciated.

Dont bother testing it mate its history, just replace and move on.The biggest challange you have is to get the oil out of the cooling system. put1/2 litre of low foam washing liquid in tothe system and drive the car for an hour and drain and flush till clear then redo if requird. then when you are sure the system is clear of oil refill with a 50/50 mix of red vx coolant. Job done,

As Gary says, its a common problem but luckily the replacements are not expensive ;)

If you've got oil in the coolant system (and you didn't pour it in there) your oil coolers breaked. Just chuck it and fit another.

Earlier I connected the oil cooler to a bike pump, having blocked the other hole, and put it in a bucket of water. I couldn't find any sign of a leak with the pump pushed as hard as I could.
Does this mean it's not the oil cooler that is at fault? Could it be a head gasket? If so, how much work is involved in doing those as I've got this far?

terribly sorry old boy, I am a little tired.....if you can tell me how oil can get into a pressurised coolant system I am all ears. Especialy when there is only one very small high pressure oil way which passes through the head gasket and is not close to any coolant ways.
Head gasket is the usual diag from ppor pros (who should know better but sadly, in the modern age, dont!)
Anyway, consider that the oil system is at very high pressure.....even a small pin hole leak will make quite a mess of the coolant system.
Sometimes you can spot the leak but, it normaly requires an air line to get enough chuff behind it :y
