Title: Engine Cuts Out when Warm
Post by: daveball on 10 August 2009, 15:33:41
Elite 3.0 L Estate 1999

Have just had the classic "engine cuts out whilst driving after a certain warm up period" syndrome! It has happened twice, and engine doesn't restart until a wait of 20 mins or so, it seems completely dead. I have read out the error codes and there is only the 31 No RPM code. It seems reading the forum that I should suspect the crank sensor, but error 19 is not displayed. Is it still likely to be the crank sensor or its cable???  I had the oil changed last week, could disturbance and damage to the sensor cable have taken place, and if so wouldn't I get error 19.  This is one of those faults that are a right pain, especially if you can't guarantee that its fixed before launching into built up areas with traffic queues.

Had this problem three weeks ago, I also had no 'code 19', £51 for a new GM crank sensor, problem solved. Good luck  :y

Write down how to do the paperclip test and carry it with a paperclip, next time it dies, read the codes off then. You may get a MAF code or a straight up 19 code but it does derfinately sound like the crank sensor.

Dodgy crank sensor can cause this issue - should show a code 19 though.  Suggest also check/clean ICV.  ;)

It doesnt always come up with the code straight away...but it will get worse and eventually not restart...change the crank sensor, genuine GM...as said only £51 and easy enough to do yourself :y

Thanks for replies. Seemed worth changing sensor anyway at the price of  £51, but my local Vx dealer quotes £90, where can I get for £51? and has anyone had experience of non vauxhall parts for the sensor, I don't intend keeping the car for much longer.

Only use genuine Vx crank sensors, the copies are notoriously unreliable! You need someone local with a Trade Card, try PM'ing Darth Loo Knee, I think he has one :y

Thanks again.  Tell me o you knowledgeable ones:  Does the error log got by using the paper clip method show intermittent faults or do they get reset if the fault actually goes away as in my case. If I read out the error log at fault time as suggested will I see the fault code come up. The next question of course is how does the CPU decide there is an error with the crank sensor, does it check for pulses in which case it can't tell the difference from engine stopped, or does it measure resistance or some other parameter.

There are different ones, for my 1998 2.5 petrol the part number is V0090492061, from Vauxhall stealer with T.C. (worth 10%) £51.47 including vat on the 17/07/09. Not sure how the price changes for other models.

Yes I've rung several parts suppliers in various parts of the country and I reckon that a crank sensor for a 1999 3.0 OMEGA is around £90. I can get a non Vx part for around £50 inc vat. from my nearest motor shop.

Well all I can say is that at least 5 Vx agents spread across the UK are trying to charge me £79 + Vat for the supposed Vx crank sensor linked to my Reg No.

A couple quoted the same Vx Part No as 90492006 for my car.  In desperation I've ordered from a non vx source at £38, don't know what I'll get!!!.

Dave PM me with your Reg number I will see how much I can get one for. Last time I got one which was a couple of weeks ago it was around £57 as they had gone up with Vauxhalls price boost :(
