Title: Advice on self levelling rear shock replacement

Morning all,

I think that one of the rear shocks on my 99 elite estate is leaking fluid. The car has self levelling suspension. I was quoted £120.00 + VAT for a new one at the local VX agent, non-self leveller was about £80.00. Halfords quoted me £55 + VAT, but I suspect that was for a std one. Three questions really:

1) Are there non VX replacement self-levellers available at better prices? (I guess 2nd hand is false economy)

2) Should I replace both shocks at the same time?

3) Would I notice much difference if I went to non-self levelling?

If you beg, steal or borrow a Trade Card I think the genuine self levellers are about £75 each plus the VAT. You can get a Trade Card by joining the Autobahn Stormers, it cost £20 for the year :y

Absolutely yes!

3) Would I notice much difference if I went to non-self levelling?

Opinions differ slightly on here, but it depends if you load the back of the car up much. Do you really notice the self levelling effect? I don't on mine, but I have a saloon! If you can afford it, I'd suggest getting an ABS card and replacing both rears with new self levellers - that way you know you're getting the same thing.

Took the self levellers of my Elite saloon, only cost me £50 for no VX dampers, it drives the same as before I changed them, so I'm happy enough with them, but as mentioned if you tow a caravan or something you may want the self levellers
