The very first thing to do with any autobox problem is to check the level
After that, check the ECUs for fault codes to see if there are any pointers.
You could also pop the front sump off and check for any remains of a broken thrust washer in there...

no codes coming up for it and oil ok

Pop the front (small) sump off - check for the remains of a broken thrust washer. You may have to wipe it right out, to find it....

Just a 'word' of warning, I have the three pieces of my autobox thrust washer in front of me while I send this post, replaced the 2-3 solenoid and the fluid, the autobox is smoother than ever, as long as your not 'drifting' or driving like a 'total pratt' it can last for years, so first replace the fluid with new - Dexron 3.

If you carry on driving with the thrust washer missing, you're going to need machining on the pump face, and the amount of extra play in the input shaft is likely to damage other components.
I don't like to disagree, but based on personal experience (and learning the hard way) I would urge you to get the thrust washer changed while the box is still good, Richard... :y

How long did this job take you?
Have changed oil and filter a few weeks ago - car lost drive for a few seconds about 3 weeks ago but ok since. Never been a problem on motorways.

Sorry for the delay, about 1 hour to remove the two sumps, take out the solenoid 'pin' replace the solenoid, then clean filter and replace sumps, refill with 6 litres of DExron 3.
I hear the warning however, I have been unemployed for 12 months so money is short and spent money on , new battery, crank sensor, 4 new tyres, oil filter sevice. The car runs very well, yes I will replace the 'thrust washer' but when money is available.
