Title: Engine oil need advice
Post by: Mike_T on 18 August 2009, 22:10:03
My 2.5 has just covered 91,000 miles and has had engine oil & filter changes twice yearly (11,000 per year aprox) I have been using Castrol Magnatec 10w 40.
The valve lifters are a little noisey but then they have never been that quiet. Would you reccomend changing the type of oil I am using and also would you say it is good to use flushing oil or not ??
greatfull for any help.

I would try GM Semi-Synth 10w40 oil. About the best value you can get at around 30 odd quid for 20 litres with a trade card and it's proven to be OK in an Omega.

I wouldn't flush it personally, just do a couple of more frequent oil changes until the lifters settle down.

My lifters have been noisy from 50k miles.

I've tried 5W30 fully synth and 10W40 semi synth. It's better on the 10W40.

The car's now on 156k miles and with regular 5k miles oil changes it hasn't really got any worse.

Oh and definitely don't flush - you could rake up a nasty bit of sludge that could starve the engine of oil and kill it.
