Title: Off with its heads!
Post by: ScottieMV6 on 18 August 2009, 20:24:53
Finally (mainly thanks to help from Andy B - Thanks Andy) the heads are off the car.

Seems like I caught it as it was just starting to go so maybe lucky? Just goes to prove that compression test is not conclusive proof either way.

Anyway the rebuild will commence once I get back off my holidays.

You need to get a hoover on that now and get rid of all the bits of old gasket before anything drops in the oilways. Cleanliness is most important  :y

That looks like the classic symptoms of incorrect coolant levels from the previous owner, The 3,0 i broke a couple of years ago had gaskets like that when the heads were removed. the last owner had  vertually no coolant at all in the system. It might be worth changing the oil cooler while your at it that stage unless you have already done it as the grey sealant looks kinda fresh.

While it easy to access I would recommend undoing the 4 bolts that hold the breather in place so you can clean it out properly.

You'd done most of the hard work before I got there.  ;)
