Title: Is this mix of tyre sizes okay?
Post by: berserkerboy on 20 August 2009, 19:01:53
I bought an omega 2.0 16v dualfuel off of egay. Got a puncture today and have realised that the tyres are not standard sized. I have 2 x (215/55r16) on the front, brand new. 2 x (225/55r16 of which one is punctured and due for renewal, the other with plenty of tread) on the back. A steel spare sized 205/65r15.
I guess the alloys have come off of another model but I am worried about putting the spare to use on the rear. Will it do damage to the diff?
Also, should I renew both rear tyres to the same size as the fronts or just buy a new rear the same size as the other?

what you mustn't do, except in emergency, is have different sizes on the same axle, as that can make handling unpredicatble.

I believe the law only allows different sizes on same axle for 'emergency' use as well.

It's alright as a get you home but not legal to mix on the same axle :y.

I'm in a similar situation - bought mine two weeks ago, got newish 205/50x16's on the front, and the correct 225/55x16's on the rear.... think the previous owner was cutting corners. Don't think there is any real safety issue as TheBoy & Pete Elite say as they are on different axles, but luckily doing a swap with another forum member to put them right  :y

Okay. Thanks for the info. Think I'll get a couple of cheap 215/65r16 for the rear end. At least I'll have most tyres the same. Also makes the spare about the right size 0.78% difference. Good for getting home.

Looking at the handbook, I think you should be matching the rears by buying 215/55 VR16's  :-/ :-/
