Title: Autobox or brakes?
Post by: zarehs on 21 August 2009, 22:57:41
I have a 2001 2.6 CD Omega, its an automatic.  i'm not a seasoned automatic driver, usually drive a manual, so I'd be grateful if anyone could advise whether the Omega should roll back when on an incline whilst it on D?

If it should not, what is the fault likely to be, the brakes or the autobox?

thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, depends on the hill. Mine only holds on fairly shallow hills when cold, but will hold a little better when warmed up. Dont worry about it, not many cars will hold on a slope. Just use the brake with left foot, sitting in D on a hill with foot on brake  wont harm the car.

Left foot braking is not a good habit to get into, neither is blinding the bloke behind with your brake lights. Personally I use my handbrake, although my Mig does hold on hills.  ::)

Well I guess it was on a 30% gradient getting out of a car park.

Agreed .. and if you don't use your hand brake it will fail on you (and the MOT)

"use it or lose it" ...  :)

If your air con or climate is on the revs are slightly higher and I have found they seem to hold better then  :)

no probably wont hold, there is no way for the car to know the gradient your on, so the tickover and level of drive applied by the car at those revs will be overcome at some point, also vareys from box to box to an extent ime. as long as it drives ok, no thumping or unexpected slipping  its fine.

Fyi, oof recommends change box fluid every 60k ish, dextron 3 atf.! its not a sealed unit as any vx dealer may tell you

That's what you have 2 feet for ..... 1 for each pedal!  :y  :y  :y
Once a year for my handbrake at MOT time has been good enough for mine for the last 16/17 yrs!  :y  :y  :y

Blinding the bloke behind? We have the USA and their high/eye level brake light to thank for that, if their tail/brake/turn signal lamps were seperated a little there'd be no need for them .... and 'we' wouldn't have needed to copy them!  :-?  ;)  ;)

Must admit I left foot in my escort and taht a manual. Swapping feet takes time and when time has gone, its not comming back.
