Post by: raywilb on 21 August 2009, 09:41:11
when a code-reader comes up with a code and states not present. does that mean the original fault is ok, but the code needs clearing. ta in advance.

Can do, can also mean an intermittant fault that just doesnt happen to be presesnt that minute.

Clear it, if it comes back, then its time to investigate  :y

Generally 3 common states:

PRESENT - ECU is currently detecting the fault (or in some cases has detected the fault during this session, but currently unable to confirm if still present)

INTERMITTENT - The fault has been seen to disappear then come back during this session. Often, status changes pretty quickly to PRESENT

NOT PRESENT (NP) - Fault has been detected 'recently'.  Can mean a present fault, but engine/ecu in a condition it can't check for it.

The definition of 'recently' can vary from this session to last 20 clean starts, or in one or 2 cases (particularly immobiliser codes), since codes were last cleared.
