Hi all im having probs at the mo when i drive at 70-80 the car shakes and i can really fill it on the steering wheel. The balance on the wheels are fine and i had the wheels tracked and still the same thing. One day it can be fine next day it can be really really bad.Can anyone think what it maybe
-
Have the rear wheels been balanced? This can cause the car to shake at certain speeds.
May be worth a full 4 wheel geometry check.
-
mine does this also. notice it at about 75ish. bit its not constant, sometimes it will vibrate, others times it wont.
-
Front brake discs.
I fitted pattern discs to the front of my last Omega 5 or 6 years ago and had exactly the symptoms you have described.
I had the wheels balanced several times but the problem never went away, it justed changed in intensity.
Last year I fitted new discs all round and it cured it :y
-
so if it is the disc would that make the car pull to one side every now and again
-
Have you checked the stearing idler arm?,
are the rubber bushes on the suspension arm ok?
are your ball joints ok,
they could all cause the same probs,
How long have you had this problem? have you changed the brake disks?

It's possible but once again I'd say it's worth having a full 4 wheel geometry check. Wheels in Motion is recommended on this forum but as they're in Chesham (Bucks) it's probably a bit far for you. Worth looking around your area for a reputable outfit that will do it properly.

Warped discs can tug at the steering as you slow to a standstill. Slowing from xxx mph can be really alarming :o.
If you are getting random pull to one side it points to other things that need attention (wishbone bushes, bottom balljoint, partially seized calipers, worn trackrods). Vibration through the steering will accelerate wear in all of these components.

well i had new wisebones fitted in jan just gone
-
Also warprd diskes you should feel in the brake pedal, Depending on how bad they are warped,
If yor pedal moves up and down when you brake is one good sign for it,
-
brakes feels fine when i use them
-
Mine does it at about 40 mph, then it vanishes - worse on particular roads, but never severe - I've just put it down to incompatible tyres or needs the rear wheels balancing....
-
My brake discs were absolutely shot, heavily corroded.
I only noticed wheel shake when applying the brakes at speeds over 50mph otherwise ok no problems.
Had them replaced of course, don't think it's your discs in this case, worth checking though.

I didn't really get much pulsing through the brake pedal to be honest.
There seem to be three factors involved
1. Rough castings. With vented discs it isn't possible to machine inside the vent channels in the discs so a poorly cast disc will be difficult to balance. I think this is what I had with my previous discs.
2. Fitting discs with a bit of grit stuck behind the mounting flange. If this happens to you you probably will feel pulsing through the pedal. If you carry on driving then the disc will wear unevenly which will make it out of balance. (but the pulsing might reduce as the disc wears)
3. Holding the brake on after a braking from high speed can allegedly cause warping due to differential cooling. This would then result in uneven wear and out of balance discs.
Unless you pick up an Omega front brake disc it isn't obvious just how heavy they are. When you have felt the weight of one it becomes obvious why an out of balance one can cause the car to shake.....
Wheel alignment (all 4 wheels) is important. If components are worn or vibrating though then it is a bit of a waste of time and money because it will need doing again very soon.

I have a vibration on my 3.2 V6 Elite aswell, although I can feel it mainly through the car, not just the steering wheel. It can come in at any speed above 70. Sometimes I can drive through it if I go above 90. Strange thing is though if I slow to below 60 and then accelerate it will start at a different speed. If i hold it correctly just at the start it will vibrate for 2 seconds and then go for 2 seconds, repeating this cycle for as long as I stay to that particular speed. I have checked the prop shaft and the centre joint does have slight play, but bing a typicle mechanic I hav'nt yet got round to fixing my own car. i have just lived with it, like my engine management light - it's like an old friend to me and I miss it when it goes out.

I have always been told that any shaking above 50-60 mph will be the rear wheels.
Could be balancing.
In my case it was rear wheels with slight buckle :( I could feel the slight shake through my seat, which wasn't to unpleasent I must say ;D
-
I would get the wheels balanced 'properly'
get them to use the studs, not centre hole, meant to be more accurate.
and get them to run it up to speed again, until it says no more needed.
one of my buckled wheels was run 9 times before the machine said it was balanced....and it is perfect for the entire speed range :y
just need an outfit prepared to do it properly.
after seeing it done properly at Wheels in motion, I now know where the other places had been going wrong :y
-
If it doesn't happen when you brake it is 'worn suspension parts' !!!!!!
Steering idler, track rod ends and 'yes' check the wishbones bushes as you say it pulls to a side :y

mine does the same thing at 79/85 , been told the rear wheels cause this , had them balanced , all sorted
-
'MIGGY 24' said "I can fill it through the steering" so the problem is at the front,
if you feel it up through the 'front seats' the problem is at the rear - of the car :y

Could be a slightly bent alloy. I had a badly egg shaped one and it caused all sorts of odd vibrations that came and went. You need to go somewhere like WIM where they do a decent job of balancing and can diagnose this kind of thing.
This egg shaped wheel had already been balanced and checked twice by one of the leading fast fit places before I took it to WIM and they found the problem immediately.

I've had 6 omega's and every one has had some sort of vibration at some speed or other, found different faults on different cars but only cured it once with brake disc's. I have made it better also by changing bottom arms I have also changed them twice in a year after buying some cheap of ebay after a few months they started pulling to the right under braking as the front bushes where to weak. This could be your problem.
I have found with Omega's its worth paying more for quality parts, disc's bottom arm's, steering idler etc.
I fitted an aftermarket steering idler in feb and it failed it's mot on it in august so now has a GM one fitted.
Hope this is of some help.
