Title: A measure of how good the Omega is...
Post by: Admin on 05 December 2007, 09:50:12
I have had the opportunity to try out the new Mondeo 2.5T Titanium X estate. The fully loaded top of the range Mondeo...

Not exactly impressed...

Now a turbocharged 2.5 V6 24v engine with todays technology should really be an absolute stormer!
Instead we get get 217bhp and a similar torque figure.

The engine gives the car reasonable acceleration... shame the chasis can't handle it!

I took the car for a proper evaluation by OOF's very own Stig.... Marks DTM  8-)

I will let him comment, but his view was the same as mine.... this is simply not good enough!

The Omega is just as quick, handles better (with good dampers and springs) and gives similar fuel economy.
I would also say the the fit and finish of the interior is better in the Omega.

The motoring press are full of praise for the Mondeo though... clearly their standards are low or there is an element of "you scratch my back..."

Now I have the Saab 9-3 1.9Tid 150 for the next few days. I hope this is better...

It was interesting.

The Mondeo is a good car, good chassis etc.

My biggest gripes were:

The steering is way over assisted, particularly at speed, at 70, its much to light with very little feedback, this makes 'positive' driving a bit more hit and miss as its difficult to feel what the car is trying to do.......

The engine is not ideal, it lacks low down grunt (I assume due to the lower compression ration required to allow the turbo to be fitted) but is generaly ok. I suspect its a rushed job based around an existing power plant.

The ride is not good, this was not the sports verision yet the suspension was very hard, you felt every lump and bump in the road which would for me would be very tiring.

I think they have missed a few tricks on the ergonomics e.g., the engien start buttona dn a few other key controls are obscured by the steering wheel which it self is plastered in buttons.

The view through the rear view mirror was pretty poor....very tunnel like.

And it has bloody menu driven functiosn to!

At least it has proper indicators (take note GM!)

Having used an Astra H last week as a hire car I know what you mean. I think I'd need longer to get used to them, a quick flick gives 2 or 3 flashes whether you want them all or not.  :-/

I really can't stand the indicators on the new Vauxhalls. There is no clear feeling of when it has engaged as there is with normal indicators.

Actually the all in moulded look also feels very cheap. One of those things I think will be short lived...

Yes, but the same press have nothing but praise for the Focus, which is one of the worse handling cars I've driven since they made the Escort.

My boss has the jag and he gets wound up when i ask him how is the Mondeo.

One of our contracts is supplying Ford Bridgend engine plant with products, and you wanna see some of the things that the Jag engine goes through, or should i say dont go through.

IrmscherKris's diesel sounded OK as it left 'our' house. You want to try a low-blow Astra TD! They are what you really call rough. (Gets me to work & back though on a gallon ;))

I agree. I worked on the launch of the S and X types...I love them both.

So...if anyone has anything bad to say about them, the complaint department is open (http://forums.teamphoenixrising.net/images/smilies/catfight.gif)

Bad trim
engines put together shoddy (seen them manufactured)
can tell its Ford, plastic crap.
basically, a bag of Sh"t,  IMHO.

Not the true Jag

But as said many times on here, each to their own

The new jag does not utilise a shared platform.

The fact that ford made little attempt at hiding the fact that it was a ford based product.....

Everyone knows that it was the case, but they could have done a better job of seperating the products, in not doing so they risk cheapening the dearer brand (which they have now sold)

The X and S types will always be know in the trade as sort of Jags, not the real thing
