i was having a nose around the engine today and noticed a slight oil leak ( yep another one!) it was coming from a black pipe thats at the back of the engine , (the pipe has a rubber part that goes into the top of the engine, then its metal and looks like it goes into the top of the sump just infront of the gearbox help on by 2 bolts) the bolts holding it in place were pretty loose so i decided to take it off and refit, once off i looked inside the metal part of the pipe and it was almost completey clogged up with a thick black sludge which was quite soild. The question is ......is this normal? what is this pipe? should i now replace it? or is there a way to clean this stuff out? :y :question

That sounds like a breather, needs to be cleaned out or it'll give you problems...

Carb cleaner dude and plenty of rags. Guide here to do that breather and the top two as well.
Just done mine and had to replace the thinner of the top two. All collapsed. Part num 90528437 if yours is as bad as mine.

thanks for that guide :y yep the pipe thats shown in the guide is exactly the one im on about, what do i do with the carb cleaner though? do i just spray it into the pipe and leave it or do i need to use other tools to clean this stuff out?

Soak a rolled up rag in carb cleaner and ram it into the pipe with a blunt screwdriver - [obviously taking care not to damage the pipes around the angles] - then draw the rolled up rag through. Repeat [prob numerous times] till clean. Some people use a length of wire in a drill and whirr it out. Bit harsh on the inner walls for me though.
You wont be able to do this with the thinner of the top two pipes obviously. Replace if collapsed or collapsing, as mine was. [£4].

cheers thanks for that :y oh well looks like its a trip to Halfords for me then, is this stuff building up in the pipe normal then? i was worried it was due to maybe something being wrong with the engine :-/

If its "old black crud" as you say then its just accumulated over the years because its prob never been cleaned. My throttle body butterfly was absolutely ditched in thick, dried black crud. Its like a new pin now and much better. The tiny hole in the sidewall was blocked solid, too. It aint now.
Large amounts of "mayo" in breathers could mean underlying grief though.

No sign of any "mayo" in this pipe, just this hard, black crud but its almost completed full of it, ive just had my head gasket done, so im starting to wonder if this was one of the causing of it going :-/ one that guide, theres quite alot of other pipes that it says need cleaning ive not checked any of the other yet to see if they are in the same condition

Get the metal tube off that the right angled pipe at rear of engine attaches to and clean that out in a similar manner, mate. Two 13mm bolts. Right next to exhaust so make sure engine cool before commencing and you will need a new gasket too before dismanteling.
The guide is bang-on.

i have to replace the small gasket though do i that it has? cant just refit the one its got now? bugger! our local vaux dealer parts dept. shuts up shop at 12pm on saturdays and i dont think they open on Sundays :-/

I.M.H.O. [for what its worth] - if old gasket is reasonably intact then refit with a dab of hylomar for now, but I'd replace soon-as. Costs pence and is ridged. [P.S. I'm not an engine expert!]

ok no probs once this pipe has had a good clean out i'll have to just refit the old gasket for now and get my butt down to Vuax on Monday, it looks in reasonable condition although is a bit rusted and the black coating is starting to peel away :y
