Title: Problems after changing cam cover gaskets?
Post by: gav525 on 07 September 2009, 20:48:35
Just got my car back on the road today. While its been off the road i've given it a full service, changed the HT leads, changed the spark plugs and done the cam cover gaskets(genuine GM ones).
It was VERY smoky for the first 3 miles. My Skyline had a full engine rebuild and didnt smoke at all? What could this have been? The carb cleaner i used to clean the breathers?
And also it seems to be stuttering now from 2-4k RPM, but seems to clear after 4. Also noticed that after 10miles of driving its still smoking from the manifolds slightly? Old stuff burning off maybe?
What's up with it now then?  :-/

smoke on start up could be oil left in the plug wells, from failed cam cover seals, dropped into the bore when the plugs where changed

smoke from manifolds could be residue left from cam covers, or are still leaking.

stutter could be missfire, or a flat spot from multiram not working, probably front one on intake/bagpipe looking things by the rad.

It does take a while to burn off the engine, manifolds, transfer pipe etc so you will get a bit of a burning smell and perhaps a little smoke, but if you have done got something wrong it smokes pretty bad.
Try when the car is cold washing the old oil off with a spot of carb cleaner and a rag :y

Cheers for the replies! I'll have a look tomorrow again. I did have everything in bits and cleaned the whole lot with carb cleaner so maybe I've forgotten to tighten something?

The 16 cam cover bolts are only tightened down to 8nm which aint much over finger tight.
Carb Cleaner through the breathers has never caused me any problems so cant see it being that.
Check the plugwells, as far around the back as you can :y

I'll check them again but I know when the covers went back on the wells were totally clean. Could I maybe not have pushed one of the leads home fully?

On ours, smoke from under bonnet stopped after 2 days, smell went after 6 or 7.

This was with small local journeys.

Only had smoke from exhaust for just a few seconds.

Mind you, ours was done by the local 'expert' ...  :D

When I changed my Cam Cover gaskets there was a fair bit of smoke - it crept up from under the bonnet right in front of the windscreen.  Had me worried for about 3 days but stopped and was fine for months (I used a VW Beetle as a brake which ruined things a bit).

Leads reconnected in the right order?  Mine ran realllllly badly after getting some leads mixed up - not good late on a Sunday evening when you need the car 7.00am Monday morning.  Still - nothing a 6am rise, a torch wedged in my teeth and some incessant dribbling didn't sort out :)

Yep, I'm certain all the leads are in the right order, but I'm gonna have a look over them tonight and make sure they all have a good solid connection. Even when idling it seems to miss every so often?
Smoke has stopped now though which is good. At least I fixed something lol
