Title: What tyre please your advice
Post by: 4PLUS2 on 05 December 2007, 09:36:25
hello my fello VOO's
First may i say I am enjoying being one of you
I have a tyre problem my tyres are 225/50 x 16 should I go for V W or Z rateing also me being over joyed at getting my elly I didn't notice that the spare was on a 15in rim. Now as the alloys are ok but not perfect, I was thinking of replaceing so if I go down the replaceing route should I maybe look at a different size as I would like the spare to be alloy as well ( just me like things looking right )
Would love to hear what you all think to help me decide

Terry  :y

First of all, what is you car (If you add this to your profile it will stop people asking)
as different engined omega's have different size and rated tyres.

I like Continental Sport Contact 2's on mine

I am not sure if you are asking about wheels or tyres though, or even both!
Also a budget may help.

Here are some test results for tires..

Good Year Eagle F1 Async. is not listed here but its also very good..

For the alloys 17 will be better..I think..

You cannot get a wider wheel / tyre combination to fit in the spare wheel space easily on a saloon so it's best to keep the 195/65/15 spare.

Thx VXL
even though my road wheels are 16s

The spare is a standard 195/65/15.

For your car with 225/55/16 I would say the Goodyear Eagle F1's
Best tyre I have personally had on an Omega.
I would also highly recommend Continental Sport Contacts.

Oh and you will need V rating as a minimum. Personally I would go with W.

Michelins would be a reasonbale tyre if they were half the price......they certainly are not worth the price tag on them.

I just bought 4 Michelins 225/55x16 from ATS for roughly the same (I haggled and mentioned the Costco price), they are OK I suppose though the Contis I had before felt a bit sportier. Said that, I am happy with the Michelins, I don't push the car to the limits and I reckon they'll do the job.

A bit of 'agression' seems to help the Michelins, else they seem to 'glaze' over, reducing grip.

Yes, they need scrubbing occasionaly or they get very slippy.....reality is the compound is a bit to hard.

Interesting that the Contis come out on top in that report......

Looking from the point of view "pure performance" they are not the best..I dont understand why they add the "noise factor"  :-/

Tyre noise is a factor in choosing tyres. For me, not the primary one (my SP9000 are not the quietest), but noisy tyres can make journies tiresome.

Surprised they haven't mentioned things like tramlinig etc, unless the survey is for thin tyres...

I changed to winter tires 1 month ago..They are very noisy on the dry but for safety its necessary..(Disturbing me but no way)

And they increase the consumption by 1 liter extra.. >:(

Q, Answered spare wheel.
Yesterday i checked my tyre pressure.
Then i remembered the spare wheel might need some air, 70 iso 220.
I noticed my spare was a 205 60 R15 iso 225 65 R16, know i now why.

If you are an AA member, apparently you can get 20% off tyre's at ATS.

thanx guys
sorry guys but I probably worded it wrong
at the moment have four allie road wheels at 16in and spare steel at 15in now I don't think 16in will fit in wheel well ( i may be wrong ) Now I would like all 5 wheels to be the same allie. The allie wheels fitted at the moment are ok but not good so befor going out to buy tyres at the combination I have, but to change all to maybe different size hopefully to get better handling.
so could I go say go down to 15in  all round ar would 16in allie fit in the well or just stay as I am 16in road wheels and 15 spare, useing spare just to get out of trouble

4 x 16" Alloys, 1 x 15" Spare. (standard) - No point having another alloy as a spare, and fitting 15's over 16's as the main wheels just to get all to fit won't make any improvement in handling.  If anything, the thinner tyre on the 15 will not be as good grip wise (trust me I found that out when running 205-wide tyres instead of 225 - SUCH an improvement with the wider ones!)

I have Continental Premium Contact 2's on mine now, and there a very good tyre :y

i fitted Michelins about 1800 miles ago n they need replacing already  :'( they do grip quite well and are very predictiable though. Next time i think ill be trying someone else, not overly impressed.
