Can you test the voltage at the battery at all , the other thing to check are the earth connections to the car body . May be worth checking the battery terminals just in case  :y

electric guys should come to the rescue but i would think its a earth fault have you tried running a seperate earth  from the alternator i recently had trouble with mine and got expert advice it ended up after fitting new alternator it was the cable at the battery that needed recrimping

that the strange bit batt has never gone flat on me yet threason why it was a pain to fit is i live on a busy main road so i had to park my car the kerb edge it would have been a lot easier if i had a drive way and some ramps as somebody nicked em

Mine goes flat so sure its alternator, I live on country park so no road, traffic or people, just cows :D :D Im going in from the top so no need for ramps, diesel engine is easier to do than my petrol :y

This wire often gets hot because the crimp into the battery terminal has become loose. Is this the case here?

The fix is to obtain a terminal with a screw clamp for the cable and re-make the conenction to the battery positive terminal - or replace the whole cable assembly with terminal.

this might sound thick does that wire go to the alt or  the starter motor

it was my problem kevin after buying new alternator and having it fitted mechanic who origionaly said cable was ok found out that it was not after charge was still same at 13 volt grrrrr but i have new alternator on now mind he did say shall i take new one of and replace your old one but i thought possibly false economy but wish he would have checked more carefully i would take extra care with that cable if your charging rate is down

hi all first of all thank you for your help every body it is really appreaciated :y
ok today i decided to to have another go with a a little help froma mate  who knowes electricity just to go over my work to see if i had done something wrong before i started chopping wires any way we changed the positive terminal connection as suggested as this is what it was looking like to be the problem nope  it was still getting hot so we checked it all again alt was fine batt was fine so again another check eventually we think we found the problem the earth strap that goes from the sump to the chassie wasnt earthing propperley even tho it was clean >:( so we decided to ad another earth from the engine houst bracket to the main earth point under the battery as a test  problem went ;D so decided to leave it but i also put a new earth strap on sump to replace original so it has two earths up to now everything seems ok voltage is working as it should even with every thing on wire gets warm but not hot enough to burn your fingers so fingers crossed its sorted i have orderd a new cable from alt to battery just to be on the safe side again thank you for all your help guys  :y
