-
have you read fault codes? if not do it and post em up (link in my sig)
will give us more to go on.
Is the car well serviced? Air and fuel filters in good condition?
ohhh, and welcome to the forum :y
-
yes thanks it was serviced in april fuel filter changed and air filter there are not fault codes comming up as the ecu light is not comming on

makes no difference....many fault codes do not illuminate the light.
check for codes.
there are some that WILL cause breakdown, which dont illuminate the light.
-
how do i do it can u use a paper clip if yes where

yes, paperclip (depending what your car is....you havent said)
year / engine size will also help :y
-
1999 t elite 3.0 v6
-
that is paperclippable as per the above guide then.
Let us know the codes, and we can take it from there...
-
yes ok ill place them tonight many thanks
-
It's probably something to do with the crank sensor (root of all evil) ;)
-
it was replaced in 2008 by vx,
-
done a fault code reading and nothing displaying no fault onli 1-2
-
No codes then....
can you check for air leaks....
1 way is spray carb cleaner round different bits of the engine....if there is an air leak the noise will change as it burns off the flamable cleaner

Hi Stevie and welcome to the forum :y.
I had the same symptoms and after cleaning the breathers and ICV it was fine and problem not returned :y.
Have you made sure that the ICV is pushed all the way home into the plenum, i tapped mine in gently with a piece of wood and a mallet to get a good airtight fit :).
What are the idling revs, does it only do it when the car has warmed up?
-
hi yes it does it only when warm its idling about 600 -700 its getting right on my nerves at the mo the only thing i have noticed is that the seal is a very loose fit and the icv moves about
-
Check the spark plugs, :y

Cable tie it more firmly in place :y

had spark plugs out today and they are fauld with carbon which means running rich what causes this

Have you tried tapping it in like i suggested and if you think it is running rich then its proberly a air leak on the fueling side of things or MAF is problem :-/.
-
600-700 rpm, is that with a/c on or off?
-
Have you noticed poor fuel consumption? To cause sooty plugs you would use a lot of petrol.
Are your crank breathers clear? If the crankcase is pressurised then oil could be forced passed the piston rings and valve seals and oil could also be fouling the idle control valve.
A sticky ICV will probably work OK when it is open with a cold engine (& fast tick over) but cause more problems when it is nearly closed.

meaning air leak.. change this seal
and 6 gaskets under the plenum also is another candidate..
-
If no code 19 (crank sensor), either ICV (clean, lubricate and make sure fitted correctly) and/or dodgy MAF or MAF connector (replace or clean contacts).
-
high thanks guys for all your help ive cleaned idle control valve and bought a new seal seams to be ok at the mo.ive ordered a maf so when it arrives ill put that that on aswell
i will update if it happens again

Hi you can clean the idle out with a bit of vinagar and warm to realy hot water, lev it for an hour or so until it look clean can repeat, (make sure you remove the electric's) spray with some wd40 after it is dry then put back on should idle like new, done it loads of times ford are worse for it. :y :y
