Title: Juddering
Post by: megaomega123 on 16 September 2009, 19:36:45
Car has started to judder when pulling off in 1st gear only. It doesn't happen until the car is nice and hot.
Handbrake was over adjusted but has now been slackened a bit. Had pattern cat on it which was ill fitting, changed that today for 2nd hand gm one. There was a lot of water came out of the old one. Just some history there in case of any links to the juddering.

But why only when pulling off in 1st when warmed up? I thought clutch would affect more gears and at all times.

Is it an auto or manual gearbox  :question
It maybe  low oil in the gearbox if its an auto, always a good place to start   :y

I popped a new clutch in this car shortly before you had it. It had a complete kit - ferrodo. Clutch plate, pressure plate, and thrust bearing - so it's unlikely it's had that much wear. It was all pretty clean back there at the time.

Check the mounts too.

Have you had any coolant leaks near the back of the engine?

I did think that was the case  :y No coolant leaks and no oil leaks or loss. I have a run to do tomorrow so I can see if the new cat makes any difference :question

I too would check engine and gearbox mounts, propshaft UJs and donut coupling, centre bearing.

Needing to be hot does make me think contamination of clutch surfaces though. Any leaks evident around the bell housing?

Could be the DMF on its' way out, of course. Or the spigot bearing.

while I agree with the logic - it was all very sound when inspected, not very long ago...  :-/

if it happens for the first 0-10-15mph and if you hold it at the speed it does it, it stops as with no strain/acceleration then it goes, could be propshaft centre support, that sound/feeling comes from behind the front seats, but cant explain why yours only does it when warm :-/ but saying that i dont remember mine doing it when i left the house in the morning. a passenger in the back(middle) could feel it under his feet when it did it.

The spigot bearing would make one hell of a lot of noise every time you press the clutch if it fails. It did on mine, though intetrestingly didn't make it judder!

Checking the engine mounts is a good place to start.

Ok Had a few runs now and it is very intermittent. I also get a "spinning squeak" when the clutch is depressed. Again this is intermittent and not very loud and only seems to happen when in 2nd and then depress clutch. I'll try and get a lot of the suggested items checked today and report back.
Thanks

Hi sounds to me like you have water in the housing, or air in the hydrolik clutch, you said that you had your brakes done as binding clutch works of the same brake fluid bottle.

It was only backing off the handbrake shoes a little, so the system was never opened  :y
