Title: Classic Omega problem, please help!
Post by: katiecuppa on 19 September 2009, 18:29:00
Hi all. I am a woman in distress, I am in Devon. No that is not the problem, the problem is my '97 Omega estate 2.5 v6. It is unwell. It has the common problem of dying once the engine is hot. It restarts after the engine has cooled, but prior to stalling the temp guage drops to 0 and the rev counter bounces all over the place. The engine will restart once cold. The previous owner changed the crank and cam sensors, the HT  leads. The RAC plugged it in and the fault code was 31. Any ideas!!! I dearly want to drive the car for more than 10 minutes. I await your help with great anticipation. ;)

A bit of a long shot here, but I've come across this before, and it was purely down to a duff main earth lead.

To eliminate/confirm, just get a jump-lead and connect one end firmly to, say, a manifold stud/nut, then firmly connect the other end to the negative terminal on the battery. See what happens.

I'm no expert on the V6, but isn't code 31 crank sensor?

Nope thats code 19
code 31 is no rpm, normal without engine running.

No, 19 is.

31 is normal, means no RPM signal (codes were run with engine off)

First things first, clean the ICV!

Hi sounds like a ecu fault, is it the ecu with the heat switch on top says 85c-95c, now to be honest i dont know were u can get these from but u can remove it, but allso the crank sensor makes this fault turns off the engine dead, and when its cool'd down its back to being ok try paper clip test, :y

???? Shes quoted a fault code of 31 above.

Try the common fix first - clean, lube and reseat ICV.

Also check MAF connector for tightness.

Hi Guys, I have tried the paper clip test and the codes are now 19,73 and 74. Bloody RAC my cancellation of membership is in the post haha. Firstly I think the crankshaft sensor has to go. I replaced the MAF, it is either a dud or wiring problem. Here we go again. Thanks all for your advice so far. :)

Code 19 is the crank sensor so I would replace that first with a genuine Vauxhall one. I bet the other codes clear when you've replaced the crank sensor ;)

You surely wouldn't call out a recovery service to change a wheel?  :-/ :-/ :-/ I know people do, but I just couldn't be waiting for the sake of the 5/10 mins it takes to do it yourself.  ;)

I would.

I would not like to change an offside wheel on the M40 at night.

Last one was definitely my fault as I needed to collect the kids & I'd just discovered a nail in my tyre ..... but set off any way.  :-[ Hard shoulder of the M61 isn't a nice place. The only other was many may years ago ..... probably a crap, barely legal tyre as a consequence of being a poor apprentice.  :-/

I had 2 brand new Goodyears F1 less than 150 miles, blow out on the N1 to Paris.Turned out to be a tyre fault. After 3 months and a court summons Goodyear paid for 2 tyres and 2 new 17" alloy wheels plus a 50% off voucher my next set(no way sold it on Ebay)
