Title: just for those people who said Uni is worthless
Post by: tunnie on 06 December 2007, 17:22:28
Just occured to me.

Before i left for uni, i was offered a job at my current place (marketing executive), i was being paid by the hour. But they offered me a sallary.

After uni I am in 11k of debt to pay off (student loan) so fairly easy to pay off.

My job I have now after uni (Technical Operations Analyst), is paying 12k more than what i was offered before i went. I am 1k up! whoooo

No you miss-understood, its not the Uni that is worthless but the People that go there ;D ;D ;D

No Really, this is a typical example of the world today, Employees that have been working in such a position for years, with boot loads of experience, are paid a pittance.

Graduates, who have not got a clue about Working life, leave the Uni with a degree and immediately earn twice the amount.
(No offense Intended)

Your right there, we have gone through 3 this year, one was also sacked as he was a project leader on installing a Ģ500,000 extraction unit that was meant for outside, but in his wisdom decided it would work inside, wrong, he was told many times that it was not for the job, but he said it was, his boss was also booted for allowing him to proceed, another one was tasked to make a man cage to be lowered into the deep cellars, when he had finished it was too big to fit in the hole, and these guys were engineering graduates.

 ;D ;D ;D

One thing they don't teach at Uni is common sense. I went to Uni but people around still think that I lack common sense even though I left nearly 16 years ago.

I take my hat off to you guys, you work hard, it just annoys me when these young lads go into industry and people expect them to run before they can walk.

You dont have to be uni educated to earn top money, not shouting off but I did my stint in the forces, i have no papers or trade, but i am a top earner and this is due to the expierience i picked up doing the job i do now.

I agree...It may be a little harder and take a little longer, but you will get there if you really want to.

Could not agree more, I work in a University, just applied for a managers position because how they worded the advert I could do the job without a needing a PHd.
I was the most qualified applicant and had 8.5 years experience. They turned all the applicants down including and me and readvertised the post insisting the applicants have degrees.
Result they have offered the Job to an American who is moving to the UK.
Am I bitter, you bet, I work in specialist dept and experience is everything. Now the managers above expect me to train the new guy who is in charge of me and earns 18K more per year than I do.

Bitter Mike

This is another example of the so called 'intelligentsia' in this country trying to ensure that their new 'class' get all of the top jobs. Just look at the BBC with their policy of graduate recruitment, how can they ever be representative of the general public.

When I left school, you only went to university if you wanted to be a doctor, engineer or an artist. For most other careers you went and got a job with good company as a trainee and worked your way up the corporate ladder. I've been lucky to be able to do the latter and earn a good salary and have a nice standard of living. I'm afraid that kids today, who aren't academically gifted are going to be left on the scrap heap, not because they aren't any good but because they aren't good at sitting exams.

How many talented people are going to be overlooked as a result of this academic snobbery?? Just look at the number of succesful entrepreneurs, without an 'O' level to their name, who would be nowhere under these policies.  >:(

The BIGGEST problem with UNI today is that there are far to many pointless courses.......I mean Art this, Electronics and media that.....far to diluted and not worth much after.

Still, keeps the female count up.

Well, the government have decided that more people have to go, so the courses get dumbed down accordingly.

I remember feeling quite hard done by at Uni because my engineering degree required pretty much a 9-5 day at lectures, labs, etc. Other guys I knew were doing 2 day weeks. What's the point of the state, their parents and themselves digging into their pockets to go to university, doubtless ending up in debt, if they're going to spend 5 days a week (and most of the money) propping up the bar?

Yup.....upto a 35 hour week with the some lectures on until 9.00pm at night!

But that was a proper Engineering degree (BEng) which was fully accreditied.

Interestingly, engineering (proper) is one of those occupations which is VERY difficult to train to do any other way than a degree

I tried an engineering course - failed on second year exams, ended up on crap jobs for about 6 years then managed to get into IT

Erm no your not, by the time you've paid tax, national insurance and interest on the student loan, you will be 30%ish worse off!!

I went to university and it hasn't made a blind bit of difference to what i can earn or what job i can do.

Thats the thing with the building industry if you can blag it long enough then you can pick it up as you go along.

Yes you can do a degree in building, how do you think we learn how to wear our jeans at 1/4 mast, its quite technical you know!!!

As a current uni student, I'm not complaining. They have to have something to keep us "real" students interested :D

But give Tunnie 10 years and I bet he'll be well up.

I am full of admiration for people who give up a decent paying job to go to uni, often with no support from those around them.

Completely agree though with the point about the plethora of silly courses around. Ridiculous,  as is the government's objective for 50% of school leavers to go to uni.
