Title: another gearbox problem, or kinda the same one
Post by: erubus on 16 September 2009, 17:34:33
Hi there guys.  i'm still having problems with my autobox in my 2.5td elite.  When I start the car, the check control screen says automatic gearbox, and all the lights light up on the selector.  when i start off, i can put my foot flat to the floor and the revs wioll hit about 1100rpm then stay there, and the car will (eventually) start to crawl away, once you get to approximately 5mph, after about 5 seconds, the revs will slowly rise to 2000rpm, and the car very slowly starts to catch up until you reach about 30mph when there seems to be some correlation between what the engine/gearbox/vehicle speed are doing.  coming up the hill to my cottage after work today there was a car behind me, as the car rarely sees 25mph opn that hill i pulled in to let him past and had to do a hill start.  Foot flat to the floor, the revs went to 1100, but the car didn't move at all for at least 20 seconds, then VERY slowly started to crawl away.  once moving, the same thing, revs went to 2000rpm and stayed there, with the car eventually reaching the dizzying top speed of 8mph, for about 1/4mile when the road levels out a bit then the car started to catch up with the engine.

Has anyone got any ideas?  It's really starting to piss me off.  filled the ATF last week and there is no evidence of leaking, except for a very small amount coming from a rectangular hole underneath the bellhousing.  At least when I'm having this problem I don't get the bone-shattering judder every time i take off!

If all the lights are on at the gear selector it's normally a sign the selector switch is dirty or failing. Have a look in the Maintenance guides for the howto for cleaning it :y

Agreed but do not use WD40, go to Maplins & buy some aerosol switch cleaner

I didn't say that you did, it's just that for some strange reason many see WD40 as a universal cleaner & remedy for anything that needs a clean!! :-*

The only use I have for WD40 is throwing cans of it at chavs and halfrauds employees ;D ;D
