Title: Slight knock through the steering - suggestions...
Post by: belldarr on 22 September 2009, 22:51:25
Hi all - I can feel a slight knock through my steering on my Elite - I can also just about hear it at low speed, feels like something is loose but I had a good check around the front on Saturday and can't see or feel anything with the wheel raised or on the floor.  I was thinking that it was a track rod end but they seem sturdy enough.  It was at Wheels In Motion 3 weeks ago and Tony didn't mention anything was amiss with the wishbones.  Any suggestions anyone?

I also have a louder knock from the rear suspension - seems to be coming from the top of the shocker on the passenger side but reading other posts this seems to suggest that the shocker needs replacing (or rather the pair of them do) if someone could confirm that too it would be helpfull - or is there some kind of rubber item on top of those that may just need replacing?

Cheers in advance  :y

drop links at the front is my bet.

self level shocks tend to bang when bouncing off bumps due to oil loss meaning no damping.
Are they wet with oil?

Cheers for the fast replies gents - are the droplinks the small rods going from the shocker and spring assembly onto the hub?

And rear shocks seem pretty dry - recently had the springs replaced (6 weeks ago) as part of the MOT as one had snapped, thought they would have spotted that any leaking fluid.

Not shocks then, probably.
Spare wheel come loose?
Every thing tight after the spring change? Worth checking top and bottom shock mounts are tight.

Drop links, shock body to anti role bar.

Did the knocking only start after you had the springs replaced? Are you sure they put the right springs in?

I was assured that the springs were for self levelling when I had them fitted - and I think the knocking has been there for a while but i have only really started to notice it as I suspect whatever is worn or loose is getting worse.  Will have a god look under there at the weekend when I have a pre-winter check of the tyres and pads etc.

Just letting everyone know that I replaced the droplinks and it has made a huge difference to the slight knocking on the front.......but....... I do still have a slight knock coming through the steering but I am being very picky so I intend to replace the track rod ends.

Cheers for the advice  :y

I've just replaced a drop link after a slight knocking started on the passenger side, it sounds exactly the same as when the drivers side drop link went.... but the knocking is still there after changing.

I suspect a worn wishbone. I had a warped brake disc which has just been replaced, but still, as I'm braking, just before I stop it feels as though there is some play, like the brakes are grabbing a bit (just like when I had the warped disc on).

Could be wrong but I suspect the warped disc has cause the wishbone to wear and this is the knocking.

Well I am fairly confident that my wishbones are ok as it was in at Wheels In Motion less than 4 weeks ago and I am sure it would have been highlighted. Discs were replaced in the last 9 months and are ok, I am just going to replace anything that is within my limited skills until it is no longer knocking  :y
