Title: Track rod ends
Post by: Omegadoha, Desert Member on 08 October 2009, 10:16:50
When do you know the track rod ends are worn and need replacing. Are there any symptoms as such? My car has done 149,000kms (93,000 miles) is it worth getting them done anyway? and maybe the steering idler too?

Jack up each side at the front in turn and wiggle the wheel holding it in the 3 and 9 Oclock positions and check for play in the steering idler (passenger side) and track rod ends.

No need to replace them just for the sake of it  :y

Or the rubber around the TRE has started splitting/cracking.

I've had play in the steering before (constant small corrections on the steering wheel at motorway speeds) and it was the ball joint on the other end of the track rod. However I believe most (if not all) migs are steering box, not rack.

(^^ waits to be corrected).

Spot on mate - Omegas are all 'box and linkage' set-ups.
