Title: Slighty Smokey
Post by: oceansoul on 17 October 2009, 17:48:25
Right, so Ive just replaced my rocker cover gasket as per the guide on here. Slight problem my small torque wrench decided today was a good time to break :( so i couldnt do up the rocker cover to the 8Nm. Ive done them fairly tight. However when i started it up there was a lot of blue smoke coming from the exhaust (which i guess a lil oil must have slipped into the cylinders when i had the plugs out). But i also got a faint amount of blue smoking coming from the zorst side of the rocker cover :/ is this likely to be because i didnt do all the bolts the same tightness, or just some oil there thats being burnt off :/ should i just let it run for a while and hope it stops??

Probably just a bit of oil that found its way onto your exhaust heatshield, or thereabouts when you cut the breather?

I think the real reason for the 8Nm max. torque on the camcover bolts is not cracking the plastic.
As far as I can make out, on the 4-pot camcovers anyway; the seats where the o-rings sit will 'ground out' on the top of the cam caps as the o-rings compress, and any further torque on the bolts will simply compress the plastic locally, with a chance of cracking it, rather than distort the whole cover.

I await the opinions of wiser OOFers than I on this matter...

It could be old oil burning off which does take a while, you'll have to keep an eye on it. 8nm is not much more than finger tight.

I would agree with the other two chappies :y :y
sounds just like old oil that was / is on the exhaust, Keep your eye on it though.
if oil did get into your cylinders then it would be gone with the first run of the engine.

Yep, it is just the old oil, give it a few days and a few miles and it will be OK.
