was under the rear yesterday after work, looking at bushes, car had been on the drive about 30mins, and noticed a fair bit of warmth on my my face as i lay on the floor with car above me.
Should not still be that warm by now i thought and tapped the exhaust. Stone cold, touched the dif and was still very warm to the touch. That cant be right after 30odd mins at rest to cool down surely?
I've not changed the dif oil since i had the car and there is a bit of a weap round the dif to prop seal, but its not a massive leak it seams to me.
Do difs get hot normally? And or has the oil leaked out long ago and its just waring itself to death?
I'll change the oil asap obviously. :-)

it should not be that hot, they get a bit warm, but you say the exhaust is cold and its hot sounds bone dry, dont think putting some oil in it, would get another one be on safe side, you dont wont to be driving a long and the dif to lockup it would cost you more than a dif if that happens.

Diffs do get hot. High power cars have diff oil pumps and coolers. Check the oil level in yours NOW and change the oil as soon as convenient. If its not making any undue noises then its probably okay.

yes, they do get hot and thats a big old lump of iron so wont cool down to fast

i concur diffs do get very hot that is why they have extreme pressure oil in them you will find its perfectly ok

New oil going in. Mrs is running me a bath as i speak. :-)

Interestingly, the LS oil seems to help prevent seal wear

Am I right in thinking that some of the 3.2's (MV6's ?) have limited slip differentials? (LSD)

Well, dont think there is too much to worry about. Touched the dif after 2 mins on the drive and its was not much hotter than yesterday after standing for half hour or so.
Big lump of metal holding the heat soak for longer, as said, and only got about 100 mills in so had not lost much over its life. Topped it up for now and will see if it leaks significantly and decide if the seal needs doing, then go from there i guess....???
Mine is def not an LSD going by the way the inside wheel spins up pulling out of junctions in the wet, and the dry on those poxy falkens, sc3's have no such issues in the dry, plus its an Elite not an Mv6 so not likely.
Mark you mention LS OIL. I take it you mean lsd seals fail less often?

Yes, I suspect the friction modifiers in the LS oil (e.g. BOA90LS) help the seal
