Title: Gearbox oil change
Post by: Martin_1962 on 04 December 2007, 20:54:21
How much money and how much work?

I know it needs doing, just a matter of doing it but I don't want an ATF shampoo

Not sure if it was good value or not but I got my ATF from Halfords for about £42.00 for 10 Litres (2 x 5 L packs), was Comma AQ3.

iirc Mark DTM says you can't beat Fuchs Titan ATF 4000 from Opieoils on price/quality... £26.99 for 5L. Comma's is apparently a bit cheaper though. Was it with Halford Trade Card?

Yet its £19.95 for 5l   :-/

Probably less with a Halfords Trade Card.

£37 for filter and gaskets from JPAT delivered
£20 per 5l from Halfords.

Messy jobs, but nothing difficult.  Unless bits of thrust washer are there, as that will be a gearbox off, and about £15 for a bronze replacement

Sassanach cleaned the filter on mine, said he'd never yet seen a blocked filter. He also used liquid gasket.  :y

If you are a member of ABS you can get a filter and gasket set for £30 from the back of the SSN magazine.

Messy job indeed... a four post ramp that can lift the car about 6 ft is a definite plus point!

I did contemplate this job, although I only have 50k on mine. problem is I'll need to have the car in the air, level, and with the engine running, while I am under it.... not simple with only (busy) street parking available :(

It's also really helpful if someone is in the car engaging each gear while the box is being refilled.

I think ATF changes are like most other lubricant / fluid changes... the more frequent the changes, the better.

..if street parking, you also need two sets of keys. One in the ignition to keep the engine running while you are under the car checking the level, and the other to lock the car so that some clever guy does not try to take off in it!

Time for an ATF party  :D

Mine probably needs doing after I shifted a 100 ft "portable" trailer mounted radio tower for the radio club. Boy, was that heavy.  :o

Has it ever been changed before????  ::) Scary!!!!

If there was somewhere we could hire a ramp and obtain a drum or two of DexIII then we could have a 'ATF change meet' for a change from the Cambelt meets!

I'm not cleaning the floor afterwards though!!!

How high do you need to get the car to do this ?? Got all the bits now, and I have 4 standard axle stands and a trolley jack ! So can I get it high enough to crawl under and drop both sumps ?? Not looking forward to this one .... sounds VERY messy  :(

You do most of it lying on your back, so high enough to clear your belly...  ;D  that would be too high in my case  :(

I'm not too comfortable about using axle stands at all four corners, especially as I never manage to position them well at the back anyway.

When I did mine I drove the back of the car up on to a couple of scaffold planks to give a few more inches clearance and the front on axle stands - obviously its just when refilling that it needs to be level, so you can hoist it up higher for the sump removal/refit.

The messiest job I found was scraping off all the old gasket from the transmission mating surface.

Refilling I did with a funnel and length of hose.  SWMBO poured in the fluid and I held the hose in situ and clear of the exhaust.   I'm sure there are better ways though.

It took quite a lot more after starting the engine - at least a couple of litres I think.  I used 6-7L in total.

Easy. Park on level surface - overfill slightly - lower car - let excess drain off.

Much better than trying to precariously lift the thing on 4 axle stands!

When it comes to refilling, park car level. Jack up drivers side. Pour oil in until just overflowing. Start engine. Pour more in until just overflowing. Cycle through gears. Lower car (with plug removed still) so its level. Jack back up, replace plug.

Take for 20min drive and recheck level using above method.

mine is due for its second change soon, i did mine at 100K

Wasnt that hard, didn't spill anything until i turned the engine off without putting the sump plug in  DOH!!!!!!!

Took an entire morning to do and was costly, but the results were fantastic, changes were smoother and the box felt a lot happier

Or we gonna wait until the summer  ::)

I am contemplating a 'poor man's AFT change', i.e. pump the old stuff out with a500cc syringe then pump the new stuff in...

far from ideal i know, you get to replace even less than the half you would get with the two sumps removed, you can't clean the sludge inside the sump, or look for thrust washer bits, and you can't change/c;en or even inspect the filter... but getting under the car and removing the two sumps on the road is quite tricky.  :(

Just a thought, access seems to be a major part. I recon jacking up and supporting a car takes quite a while, and its never nice crawling on ones back under a car. Also your arms are not in the best position to work. Couldn't we maybe find a friendly garage, somewhere central, and pay him a uitable amount to let us use his place on say a Sunday. It should be easy changing fluids and filters if safely up in the air. In fact it would be easy to do gearbox changes as well. When I got my clutch done on my old Omega, 2 guys lifted the box up and fitted it in a few mins. So, if we paid say £10 each for the use of the facilities, and had say 10 oil changes thats £100 in his pocket. SOmeone wanting a gearbox change would pay say £20, cause of bashed nuckles !.

This could grow. If we could access a place regularly, then we could service our cars in relative comfort, plus learn about them from the more experienced. Some of the help questions suggest that the new owners could definately do with a bit of support. Could develop into a regular thing, eg twice a year have an oil/filter change party, then another for gearbox oil change etc.

What do you think ?
Ken

Also of course, we may be able to get a good price on oil, filters etc, if we are buying in bulk. It would be extremely handy if we had a couple of the experts with us, but ONLY TO ADVISE. Not fair to expect people like Mark and Sasannach to do all the work while we sat around watching.

Maybe I'm suggesting more of an active, "hands on" OOF. There is a small garage near me with a 4 poster, who doesn't get that much business. I was thinking of asking him to let me use his lift for a reasonable fee to change my gerabox oil, and just thought of extending the idea.

Just me being pessimistic as usual, but I suspect he may have an issue with insurance... having non-employees who's credentials and skills are unknown work under the 4-post may not impress his insurers in case of an accident... but it's worth asking anyway.

No, OK, you are right, the insurance question didn't figure in my thoughts. Shame really, I alway seem to think that a handfull of fivers will keep most people happy !. Actually its a shame that nobody has a high garage, there are some 4 posters going for not a lot on the old fleabay. Anyone fancy a garage roof extension ?

Don't let me spoil you plans... pop the question at your local garage... fivers work magic. Sadly I'm too far away to participate.

on the basis of what you are saying here i may have an idea.....

A friend of mine owns a local garage, and i am happy to talk to him and ask if he would be happy to supervise a ATF party.

However it would mean a trip down to Devon/Cornwall Border and for some members i could see that being a stumbling block
