Title: Recommendations for a bike carrier?
Post by: Neil_MV6 on 22 October 2009, 16:35:42
I'm looking for a bike carrier for my 2001 MV6, either roof or boot mounted.

Can anyone recommend one please?

Cheers

just to say, can get 2 in the boot with the seats down and their front wheels removed. Bose shelf is a bit in the way on my Elite but should be fine on your mv6.

But if it must be external try Thule(?) via Halfords?
They do both i beleive, both are a pita, roof mounted are a mare if you park in a car park as the hight limit will wipe the bikes off the roof if you forget.
And rear mounted need a light board or the plod will pull you for obscuring brake lights and plate etc. And they restrict boot access and usually clip to the boot edge with straps risking damage.

Or an Estate of course. :-)

I got on okay with Halfrauds roof mounted carriers when I used them several years back.
Managed three up top - but needed some lateral thinking on positioning and use.
- Of course, needed roof bars but I bought those to go on the fitted rails at the time.

Still have the carriers in the garage if you want to make me an offer!!

there is a realy good one ive seen around it gose on the tow bar, and they are under £10 holds 3 bikes, slots into the cable brake on tow bar. so you can still tow. think its called a V.

called a V-Rack, looks interesting if you have a tow bar that is

Towbar mounted carriers are OK, but if you intend towing and carrying, you need to be aware of the noseweight on the ball - 2 bikes plus carrier can dent the 75Kg noseweight limit.

I use VX roof rack with two Halfords bike clamps. As per above you need to keep an eye out for low obstacles. I periodically stop to check them for tightness. Years ago had the two bikes on a boot affair (on a Carlton) which I thought was better BUT could never keep the securing straps tight.

If you are going to do a lot of carrying then the roof rack would be my recommendation with the best clamps you can afford. Better weight distribution (F/R) and you can get in and out of the boot.
