Having just become an Omega 2.6 CD V6 on an 01 plate owner with 131,000 miles on the clock. I would like to get the cam belt replaced as I have no service history saying the belt has being replaced latley.
I went to a local garage who quoted £100 labour, £28 for the belt, £90 for a cam kit (if needed) and VAT on top.
The questions I am asking are:
Is this a fair price
Do I need the cam kit
I am thinking maybe I should do it myself. I am very mechanically minded and on looking through the forum have all the tools accept the cam locking kit (which I have no idea of price).
Any suggestions would be helpful :exclamation

Price doesnt seem unreasonable, you definitley need the Kit though, which includes the belt.

Yes, you need the cam kit. Someone on here was selling a used locking kit for £49 delivered. £100 labour sounds very reasonable.

Thats a good price.
I would consider having the water pump replaced at the same time :y

The kit is the most important part !!
It is NOT the belts that fail .. but the bearings in the tensioners, these seize and then either go completely out of adjustment or cause the belt to fail as they are not rotating. Either way the valves and pistons then meet with, usually, terminal results.
So every 40,000 without fail .. no ifs or buts... :)

when I bought my last 3.0 was done 65000miles on kit and owner say is still ok for next 15K as dealler say need replace every 80K :(

I am not slating your local garage at all here, but I have seen to many to mention that have been done at local garages that have not used a locking kit, even though they told the car owner they actually had >:(
Even Vauxhall themselves leave cars not timed up properly..... :(

your garage have quoted cheap, too cheap for my liking, they quoted for the belt AND the kit, the belt is part of the kit! The tensioners must be replaced, thats the part that fails, not the belt, they are always needed.
With those miles, i would replace the water pump too.

... or 4 years.... - as quoted, it's never the belts that go, always the tensioners. Def do the water pump and auxiliary belt too (make sure genuine GM) :y

I thought I would update you I what I decided to do re: cambelt.
With no disrespect to the local garage, with what they said and what I have read on the forum, I don't think they were the right people for the job.
Also after looking what everyone said via replies and searching the rest of the forum I decided that it would be impractical to DIY as the cost of bits and specialist tools in comparison to an offer from a forum member, Daz ( Darth Loo-Knee). For what little I would save in comparsion to making a serious mistake was not worth it.
So Daz came to fit cambelt/water pump yesterday (Wednesday).
All I can say is he did a very professional job and trying the car today, it drove like a dream. Thanks Daz :y

Yes that's true. If I had took it to the garage, I would of dropped it off in the morning and picked it up whenever. Just trusting the job was done.
At least Daz was completly open about what he was doing
