as above is there any point in installing a cool running thermostat like those from the vauxhall specific tuning centres? :-?
-
there is no room for any different tape of thermostat
-
is it not just a straight swap out for a stat that opens a earlier? :-? :-? :-?
-
is the thermostat on the 3.0 the same as the 2.5? i ask cos i want to install a cool running stat. while at tesco's i have just seen in the total vauxhall mag in the back pages the guys from the mag rebuilding a 3.0 v6 and installing a cool running stat from a xe? what is this xe? (they were also adding a supercharger!!!)if anyone can help me with this, the stat, i would appreciate it as i would like to do what i can to bring the running temp of the engine down everyway possible :y :y :y
-
a 'cool' running stat is not going to make any significant improvment in performance, it will just waste fuel
-
I dispair with some of these modifications that these so called 'performance' companies sell.
A cool running stat wont do jack.
And engines temp is far more to do with the cooling capability of the rad and the 92-93 DegC setting for the standard setup gives a pretty much ideal setup for this power unit
-
The V6s prefer to run warm - a waste of time
-
im not looking to improve the performance i would just like me migger to run a bit cooler as occasionally esp in stop start traffic the temp goes up to 100 with fans working.
the cooling system has been flushed. so should i think about trying a new standard stat and new radiator?
on motorways and long drives the temp sits just above 92 rarley rising to 95 so maybe im being a drama queen? :-[ ::)
any help please :y
-
as long as it does not go past 100 you will be fine.
-
ahh there in lies the problem which is rattling me as it does nudge over the 100 bar :(
after being on A1 getting into london the temp spike intermittently often pushing past 100 for 5-10 mins before coming down when i move but when i sit again temp begins hunting for 100 again :-?
so im thinking now i should just buy and fit new stat and rad cos this will keep bothering me knowing i could do something about it >:(
-
could be a sticking stat, replace with a standard GM one.
-
ok ill get onto it asap :y thanx for the advice tunnie :y :y
-
If the problem is only really occurring when stationary or in slow-moving traffic, surely your first port of call should be to ascertain 100% that your radiator fan(s) are doing exactly what they are supposed to be.
You'd be well hacked off if you went to all the trouble and expense of buying/fitting thermostats and radiators that made no difference at all.
-
the fans do work and they do all three of them! i seen the blast of air clear a puddle from under the car before!
when i got my migger end of march it had been sitting since last sept and when i drove it at first it constantly overheated after flushing this stopped but im concerned that maybe the rad isnt fully flushed/has a severe blockage, so if i get a new one i at least know that is no longer an issue :)
-
If it is running hotter than normal then fix the problem rather than fitting a cooler stat. Both the original and cool stats will be fully open at 100 degrees c - so how is it going to help?
Bear in mind that you won't have a problem until 115-120 degees C because the boiling point of the coolant is raised both by the antifreeze and the pressure in the cooling system.

from what ive been told from the fellow oof-ers im not thinking bout the cool running stat anymore ;)
im just gonna try changing the stat for a normal gm standard stat as im having me miggers cambelt changed soon so gonna get that changed at same time ::)
then if im still getting slightly high occasional temps then ill swap out the rad aswell :y
-
Unless you are particularly rich, I'd suggest taking the radiator you've got off the car, use some sort of flushing solution (hot water + bio washing powder would be the cheapest option), fill it with that and leave overnight, then flush the bugger to kingdom come with a hosepipe. £200 saved.
Having ripped my old rad to bits (had a crack in the plastic) and looked at the size/condition of the coolant passages, it seemed quite improbable to me that 'unflushable' deposits could block it.
-
If the cam belt is coming off check / change the water pump as well. You never know. Could be a plastic impeller fallen to bits.

yes i am getting the water pump changed aswell and as for the rad i think i will take it off and give it the damn good flushing you recommend the day before the cam, pump and stat change
also i didnt think about the impellor blades of the water pump? so hopefully when the migger goes back toghether it wont get flustered in traffic anymore :y
thanx all :y :y :y
-
try a decent car acc shop holts use to do a very good radflush as did wynn`s i can recomend both as have tried and worked wonders on my carlton and my cav sri
-
havent other members said against using radflushes and using a central heating flushing agent of which the name escapes me ::)

I would not recommend oil flushes (regular oil changes are best)
Coolant flushes would be ok, best thing to do is take the rad out. Fill it with boiling water, and feel for any cool areas.

ahhh yes put in hot water and check for cold spot!! :-[ ::) :)
seems so obvious now!!! :-[
thanx again tunnie :y :y :y
