Which engine does your car have; 2.0, 2.2, 2.5, 2.6, 3.0, 3.2? (did I miss any? ;D)

The link posted by Holtender for sorting out the cutting-out problem is spot-on for this engine.
When you say the fuel gauge drops, do you mean that it sometimes reads correctly, then drops down to zero, but occasionally recovers to read about right again?

Hi Bellasmum
Even though you have replaced the IAC Valve, the real problem is the breather pipes will be full of crud(old oil) these will need some careful cleaning.
Follow the above link to have a very happy Omega running just like it should!

when the car cuts out, it does not do it everytime i brake, but every time it cuts out the fuel gauge is showing much less petrol than is in the tank, then goes up again, if the fuel gauge goes up to the correct amount the car does not usually cut out again, for a while
-
Hmm, I'm not sure I can come up with a rational explanation for your fuel gauge's behaviour, but I don't think it will turn out to be connected with the cutting out.
If it was a battery/charging problem, you should have a warning light directly indicating that, as well as the observed problems.
If, having got the cutting-out problem sorted, the fuel gauge is still playing up, I may have an easy fix for it. I'll dig out an old thread of mine on fuel gauge problems and post the final solution that I have thus far neglected to document.

thank you all very much i will get this done and let you know how she runs

From what I have read (and from the evidence of repairs that had been carried out on my previous car before I bought it)
it is quite common for the connectors on the end of the big cables to the battery to come loose (or for the wires to break up where they are crimped in the connectors).
The high resistance caused can have some perplexing symptoms, usually poor starting, but not always.
If either battery terminal gets hot to the touch then they need investigating.
