Car went in for MOT a few weeks back and failed on to much play in the steering idler so got a new one and garage fitted for next to nothing and promptly passed MOT result :)
Have noticed that the car seems to have developed a bit of a wobble for want of a better phrase. Had a look under it today and can move the idler with not to much force only about 10mm. Is this normal or how much play should there be?
More importantly how do i fix the wobble :question
Im not the most mechanically advanced person in the world most of my knowledge is thanks to the how too's on this site so lay mans terms please :D :D
-
should be no play at all afaik, sounds like a pattern part perhaps?
-
Think so chris how much should i pay for a genuine one and where to buy it. Car really dosen't feel good. :'(
-
I paid £24 from autovaux, and never had any probs with it.
like chrisgixer said there should be no play. have you checked that the nuts are tight?
-
They should last a reasonable mileage (90/100+k) so worth getting a decent one.
Can you also feel any clicking through the steering as you change wheel direction on a roundabout at a reasonable speed? This is one of the symptoms ........
-
No clicking that ive heard or felt will check that nuts are tight they seemed ok but definatley play there. iI only had it changed on the advice of the garage is there anything else i should look for that could cause this?

-
I guess you had problems with an idler from a certain firm, can i ask what? And where did you get the genuine part from Ian, heads up on cost if you please :question :y
-
PM sent regarding the cost for a GM idler.
The cheapo replacement I got had LOADS more play in it than the original 115k miles idler that I removed from the car in the first place! >:( >:( >:( >:(
-
Yes, the cheap pattern items are really rubbish.
However, these are OEM parts and so far have been excellent:

I've just fitted one from them and its worse than the 185k one I took off. £15 rubbish. >:(
They have agreed to refund if I send it back however, so fair play to em and no arguements. :y
