Sounds like the hydraulic lifters on the cam followers. When was it last serviced and what oil was used?

THIS CAR HAS ONLY COVERED 59,000 MILES AND HAS BEEN FULLY SERVICED BY MAIN DEALER ON TIME, OIL I BELIEVE IS SEMI SYNTHETIC

Trouble is what intervals? 20K or 1 Year was the VX specified interval but I don't think you'd find many on here that would leave the oil changes that long.

Try a couple of short oil changes, say now and again in 500 miles but use genuine VX semi-synth oil. Oh and please stop shouting, my eyes aren't deaf ;) ;D :y

I agree Andy, 20k is far too long. My TD is done every 3k max.

PLEASE STOP SHOUTING! I'd recommend a maximum of 5k between oil and filter changes. Also has the cam belt been done yet? Ignore VX and there 80k or 8 years, should be done 40k or 4 years max.

I have exactly the same on a newly-serviced 96k mile 2000 2.2 petrol.  Has had just had engine flush, new oil etc and has strong FSH with 14 stamps.

Not sure what oil has gone in this time though and it has clattery top-end on start-up for 10-15 seconds but then settles down to near silence.
Do I need to do anything-will it get worse or damage anything if left as is?  I can live with the noise..but was worried about oil starvation or serious wear until I read the above post.

As above really, do a couple of short oil and filter changes with the correct oil and it'll soon quieten down. :y

Thanks for this-invoices show oil and filter changed 86k, 89k, 94k and then mine after buying it just to be certain, at 95k.  Dipstick was clean as a whistle before change and remains so now.

Is it worth doing in view of the above?  Could anything be easily be adjusted to quieten it??

What oil would you recommend?

Find someone localish or apply for  a Trade Club card, VX stealers have a 4 for 3 offer on genuine VX semi-synth 10W40 :y

Seems a shame as oil is brand new and clear as water-is it worth the hassle-I have to change it in 5,000 miles to comply with the warranty anyway.... :question

Please could someone send a link re: supplier and cost of the VX semi synth/filter, plus how many litres needed?

Many thanks  :y

Get it from a Vx dealer, around £38 for 40L (4 x 5L)

Oil filters £1 each if you buy a box of 20

4 x 5L = 40L ???

Surely you mean £38 for 20L :y
